A new counsil for the International Vegetarian Union was elected at the

recent world Vegetarian Congress, The Toronto Vegetarian Congress. The

Toronto Vegetarian Association president Mr. Kevin Pickard was elected

chairman. Ms. Tina Fox, of the Vegetarian Society of the UK was appointed

deputy chair. Mr. Saurabh Dalal of the Vegetarian Society of Washington DC

was elected general secretary.Other council members include: Dr. Mitsuru

Kakimoto, president of the japanese Vegetarian Society; Mr Jashu Shah,

president of the Asian Vegetarian Union, Mr. Paul Turner,, president of Food

For Life Global; Dr. Claude Pasquini, president of the Vegetarian/Vegan

Society of Luxembourgh; Mrs. Gerry Coffey, founder and co-director of

the US; Mr Robert Fraser, president of the Vegetarian Society of Western

Australia; Mr. Richard Dimech, president of the Vegetarian Network of

" The theme for the 34th World Vegetarian Congress, 'Sharing the Vision', is

self explanitory. " according to the new chairman, Kevin Pickard. " I am very

honored to be elected as the new chairman and I feel my past experience with

spreading vegetarianism in Toronto, regarded by many as the 'multi-cultural

capital of the world', will help tremendously in my new role. "

More than 1000 people from 20 countries attended the 34th World Vegetarian

Congress at the Toronto Colony Hotel from july 10 to 16. It was the first

time in its 92-year history that the congress was held in Canada. Each

congress is under the auspices of the international Vegetarian Union (IVU),

a non-profit organization whose aim is to promote vegetarianism worldwide

through its member societies.

The congress boasted more than 70 international speakers providing

information on health, plant-based nutrition, ethics, animal issues,

spirituality, global issues, food preparation and vegetarian activism.

Attendees were treated to a culinary extravaganza of vegetarian meals

prepared by Gold Medal Award winning chefs, Ron Pickarski and Ken Bergeron.

From The Upperworld Redaction:

All the major speakers of the congress where taped by the Upperworld

NewsCrew. Most of the 60 hours that we recorded will be available on our

website. Information should be free, and so it will be. Also we showcase a

slideshow featuring all the Veggie council members mentioned above(see our

latest news). I for one appreciated my experience at the congress, and The

Upperworld Society expects to be one of the major players at WVC2002.
