Guest guest
There is much much more online but it is quite clear that the current Dalai Lama is a meat-eater. What's worse is that he not only takes what is " freely given " , which is bad enough, but has gone out of his way to eat dead animals. I understand that I should be more compassionate towards him but I cannot and will not accept the idea of a meat-eating Buddhist. And furthermore, I have never heard of people being prescribed meat for liver problems. What else can I say? It's a real shame. ---------------- It appears that whoever planned the Dalai Lama's recent trip to New York didn't ask him what he liked to eat. The New Yorker reported that the vegetarian restaurant Zen Palate delivered hundreds of lunchboxes containing meals of rice fettuccine and brown rice to a teaching led by the Tibetan Buddhist leader. Tenzin Thokme, one of the disappointed monks in attendance, grumbled, " This food tastes very good, but I would prefer a little more salt. " Fellow monk Salden Kunda added, " It's not to my taste, but since somebody offered it to me with honor, I try to like it. I make myself enjoy it. I use my mind to enjoy the food. " The Dalai Lama himself tried a vegetarian diet for several years, but resumed eating meat following declining health and his doctor's stern orders. The spiritual leader now alternates vegetarian and meat-eating days. Since the teaching was held on a meat-eating day, he did not partake of Zen Palate's offering, instead returning to his suite at the Waldorf Astoria and ordering room service to deliver a steak, well done. http://www.oreilly.com/people/staff/sierra/flum/98.06.htm THE MIDDLE WAY Vol. 60, No. 2 page 69: The Dalai Lama states that meat eating is not prohibited by the Vinaya, and he states that he does not follow a vegetarian diet. Since one of Buddhism's principal tenets is compassion and nonviolence, cruelty to animals--and to all forms of life--is discouraged. In this light, vegetarianism, a common practice among many Buddhists, makes good sense; it is a way to practice nonviolence and lovingkindness as well as gain health benefits. At the same time, there are plenty of meat-eating Buddhists in both Asia and the West. One prominent example is the Dalai Lama. In fact, most Tibetans and Japanese Buddhists eat meat. http://www.beliefnet.com/story/1/story_178_1.html -- Free email services provided by http://www.goodkarmacafe.com Powered by Outblaze
Guest guest
I agree. I am embarrassed and disgusted to say the least. From what I have read I denote a lot of shallow mindedness and blatant disregard for the laws of compassion. How can this be? Does anyone know of an email address where we can right to him ourselves and express of dissatisfaction? Guest guest
All This is very dissapointing news to hear!!! For me, a big fan of Buddhism, this is such a shock. I am sincerely embarrassed for his (the Dalai Lama's) hypocracy! In his book he claims to only eat meat once in a while if its served to him, to be polite. Well it sounds like that is a crock! I understand that I am not perfect too (I still have some old leather jackets) but I am not a buddhist monk, not am I an incarnate of Buddha. What the hell is he thinking? Frankly I am sad to read all these articles about his eating animals without second thought. And ORDERING MEAT specifically!? Ah well, WE are vegan, and at least WE are setting a good example and not hurting animals with our denial.
