THEY WERE stacked, stiff like cordwood, on the beds of logging trucks bound for

distant cities. Sinewy arms and legs were smoking over trailside fires. Their

fresh red meat was piled in open-air market stalls as women listlessly fanned

away the flies — and questions.

 

Rare apes and monkeys are among the world’s most stringently protected and

intensively studied creatures. Yet they are being hunted into oblivion.

Also,

just a few days ago the House of Representatives passed the Great

Ape Conservation Act, which will put federal funds toward helping to

stop the bushmeat trade. Next the companion bill, (S. 1007) advances

to the senate, so this is the time to write your senators and ask

them

to support this bill.
