Bid to Ban Fur in San Francisco

August 15, 2000

Imagine a city where the sale of fur is banned-no more fur stores, no more store

racks mingling fur trim with humane fashions, no more fur trinkets in gift

shops. This is the vision put forth by the San Francisco Commission of Animal

Control and Welfare at their August 10 meeting.

Spurred by an HSUS investigation, Commission member Chin Chi asked the city's

Animal Control and Welfare Commission to recommend a ban on all fur sales within

the city as a means to end the slaughter of domestic dogs and cats for their

fur. Chi wants to close the U.S. markets for these products. Chi told the San

Jose Mercury News the proposed ban " will probably be strongly opposed by those

San Francisco merchants who sell fur... But if anything needs to be discussed

regarding animal cruelty, this is one of them. "

At the meeting, Commission members saw convincing evidence of the cruelty

inflicted on fox, mink, and other animals-including domestic dogs and

cats-trapped or cage-raised for their fur. In front of a packed room, Committee

Chairman Richard Schulke declared " I'm going to try as hard as I can to pass

this or some version of this for the city and county of San Francisco, so help

me God. "
