Guest guest
Women who eat Lake Ontario fish have trouble conceiving July 13, 2000 NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Women who regularly eat fish from heavily polluted Lake Ontario seem to have a harder time getting pregnant, New York researchers report. In a study of 575 couples who were planning to conceive, women who ate Lake Ontario fish for 3 or more years took a longer time to get pregnant. Compared with women who ate no fish from the lake between 1955 and 1991, these women were 25% less likely to get pregnant each month. Looking just at 1991, investigators found that women who ate more than one fish meal each month were also around 25% less likely to conceive than were women who never ate Lake Ontario fish. Researchers led by Dr. Germaine M. Buck, of the State University of New York at Buffalo, report the findings in the July issue of the journal Epidemiology. Lake Ontario, the most polluted of the Great Lakes, is contaminated with PCBs and other chemicals. Since 1976, New York State has advised women of childbearing age to avoid Lake Ontario fish. Study co-author Dr. Paul Kostyniak told Reuters Health that many PCBs and other compounds have hormone-like effects, which explains why they might disrupt a woman's fertility. http://www.healthcentral.com/News/NewsFullText.cfm?ID=37889 & storytype=ReutersNew\ s -- Free email services provided by http://www.goodkarmacafe.com Powered by Outblaze
