1.PHONE CALLS/FAXES/LETTERS NEEDED TO STOP CRUEL BREEDER - SAMPLE

LETTER

SOURCE: IN DEFENSE OF ANIMALS

BACKGROUND:

Debra Rexelle was arrested after 300 cats were found in her property

in horrible living conditions. Many were disposed off as garbage,

alive in plastic bags. The poor animals were in cramped cages,

living in their own waste, dehydrated and malnourished. According to

the Modesto Bee she has done this twice before. First time she had

about 50 cats and of course she was released with just a fine and

started operations again. First time was in 1993, second time was in

1996. This woman is out on bail again!

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Call fax or write politely to:

Modesto D.A.'s office

800 11th St.

Modesto, CA 95350

Phone: (209) 525-5541

Fax: (209) 525-5545

SAMPLE LETTER:

I am writing in reference to the Debra Rexelle case. Releasing this

woman with only a slap on the wrist is outrageous and it will only

condone her to continue with

breeding and abusing the animals in her care.

Mrs. Rexelle should be banned from the future breeding of animals. I

am very upset and angry because the suffering of the 300 cats found

in her possesion could have been avoided had Mrs. Rexelle been

punished for her 2 previous crimes of the same nature.

Please stop sending the message to the community that irresponsible

breeding and abuse of animals is acceptable.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

2.LETTERS NEEDED FOR ELEPHANT IN VEGAS - SAMPLE LETTER

SOURCE: DOGMADAY

BACKGROUND:

Activists ask that Mirage elephant be retired

Excerpt from the LAS VEGAS SUN newspaper

Animal rights activist group People for the Ethical Treatment of

Animals is publicly calling for the Mirage hotel-casino to turn over

its elephant, " Gilda, " to an elephant sanctuary.

The elephant, a long-time part of magicians Siegfried & Roy's act,

can be seen at the Mirage's " Secret Garden " exhibit. In a Monday

letter to MGM MIRAGE spokesman Alan Feldman, a PETA official called

on the company to allow Gilda to " retire. "

" Elephants are herd animals and thrive in the company of other

elephants, " wrote Jane Garrison, elephant specialist in PETA's

research and investigations department. " Elephant experts worldwide

concur that it is cruel to keep an elephant alone. " We have received

numerous complaints about Gilda. Suffice it to say that when our

members complain to us, they expect action on our part! "

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Write polite letters to:

Bill McBeath, President

Mirage Hotel and Casino

3400 Las Vegas Blvd. South

Las Vegas, NV 89109

Mr. Terry Lanni, Chairman and CFO

MGM-Mirage

3600 Las Vegas Blvd.

Las Vegas, NV 89177

SAMPLE LETTER:

I am writing in reference to Gilda the elephant, who has been used

for many years by magicians Siegfried & Roy as part of their act.

I find it to be very cruel to keep this elephant isolated from other

elephants and kept out of her natural habitat for purpose of

entertainment. Elephants are herd animals and thrive in the company

of other elephants; they do not belong in the middle of Las Vegas as

part of a show.

Please turn Gilda over to an elephant sanctuary where she can live

happily and stress-free for the remainder of her years.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Our friend's brother passed away late last evening, August 19. He

left behind many cats in his house in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Most are

tabbys. His girlfriend is also left behind, but is not able to care

for all of the cats herself. The paramedics and police and coroner

saw quite a few of the cats when they came into the house last

night. The limit in Milwaukee is 3 cats per household. We don't

know if or when the health department may come and try to remove the

cats. If they do, they will be euthanized because all of the

shelters around here are full. If there is anyone who can foster or

find homes for any of these cats, please contact me. There is also a

mother cat with 8 kittens, which are about one week in age. This is

a desperate situation. There are many, many cats involved. This man

took these cats in off the streets, and he loved them all.

PLEASE, if anyone can help, contact me, Rozan, at DucksAreUs

Thank you.

FARM will seek the candidates' position on specific farm animal

issues and will circulate their responses among concerned

folks in their voting districts. FARM will urge animal activists

to collect funds & votes for the candidate(s) who suport their

position.

The following issues will be pursued:

O Ban of veal crates

O Ban of sow gestation stalls

O Ban of battery cages

O Ban of forced molting of laying hens

O Enactment of Downed Animals Protection Act

O Enforcement of environmental pollution regulation of factory

farms

6. SHELTER NEEDS ASSISTANCE

SOURCE: Scooteacha

FORWARDED MESSAGE:

They're cute, cuddly and they need your help.

Puppies and kittens in south west Michigan need you to save their

lives. The Branch County Humane Society is in desperate need of

everything. It's ceiling is leaking, the kennels need to be fixed

and the kittens desperately need kitty litter. The staff says

there's only enough money to operate another 2 months.

" These are my children and I love animals so much I couldn't imagine

putting them all down. " says director Gloria Orr. That's what would

happen though if the facility is forced to close Orr would have to

face her worst nightmare. " I would have the job to take them to the

vet and put them down and it's hard everything about it tears me up.

I couldn't do it. " says Orr.

The facility doesn't receive any money from the county, it solely

operates off donations and the goodness of people's hearts. Orr says

without insulation it's 40 degrees at the shelter in the winter, so

the animals often get sick, costing her money for medication. She

has stuffed socks in the ceiling and put buckets out to catch the

drips, but she needs much more than just repairs. " Pillow cases, we

stuff clothing so the cats have a bed to lay on so they're not next

to the cold. " says Orr.

The facility has a no kill policy but there is one other animal

shelter in Branch County they do put their animals down. So, if the

facility closes the future for the animals doesn't look so good. " I

just keep praying every night to the Lord keep us afloat. " says Orr.

She says the animals are her children and she'll do whatever it takes

to keep them alive. If you would like to help in any way, the

shelter's address is:

Branch County Humane Society

969 West Wildwood,

Quincy, Michigan 49082.

Ph 517-639-4426 or 517-279-8951.

They need everything from blankets for the dogs to lay on newspaper

for the cat cages or just someone to go out and pet the animals.
