During 1990 I worked for FARM (Farm Animal Reform Movement)

and Dr. Alex Hershaft as the National Education Coordinator,

largely for the Great American Meatout (March 20 each year)*.

During that time my responsibilities included, but were not

limited to, recruiting, inspiring, and organizing over 1000

vegetarian-oriented groups continent-wide in one of the

greatest vegetarian outreach movements ever -

the annual GREAT AMERICAN MEATOUT.

Despite the fact that I don't especiallylike the NAME

" GREAT AMERICAN MEATOUT " largely because

I don't like the idea of putting " meat " out -

I did do a really enthusiastic and effective job,

and groups of many kinds - promoting vegetarian living -

were recruited: religious and spiritual groups,,

animal rights groups, meditation groups,

generic vegetarian groups, and more.

One spiritual group was a group that was

lacto-vegetarian, but what was described

as their " animal rights wing " turned out to

be " ethical fruitarians " , largely on meditative grounds.

That particular group was EXTREMELY helpful

and creative and resourceful in putting together

dozens of volunteers around the USA,

providing high quality health and medical

speakers, and putting on effective outreach,

including really clever and well-coordinated

media outreach.

So, YES, Virginia, there ARE " ethjical fruitarians " ,

and the depth of their sincerity is not to be despised.

BTW, what they DO say is that fewer plants are

killed overall by following a plant-based diet,

since we don't need to kill massive numbers of

plants to feed animals farmed for human feeding,

and they also tended to believe in organic,

ecologically responsible agriculture - with

a distinct distaste for excessive packaging.

Well, if we can support ethical fruitarians,

perhaps Oprah can stop eating chicken,

since she has already given up on eating burgers.
