She told Howard that she had seen the movie Babe numerous times and that she wouldn't touch it. She gave up burgers after hearing what Howard had to say on her show. (Obvioiusly) After the show was taped, Howard said -Oprah, give me ten minutes, and I will get you off of chicken- to which she jokingly replied, - Only one animal per day!- My personal journey included 7 years where I just cut out beef (not leather at the time) after seeing the documentaries that resulted because of the Jack-in- the-box hamburger deaths. I read John Robbins this January- and that was it. Vegan Now. We are all on our own journey, and we all must come to these conclusions in our own time. Oprah has definitely provided a great service to the movement by having had Howard on her show and standing up to the cattle ranchers, when she could have easily settled. Oprah rocks! Guest guest
Make no mistake - Oprah eats dead pigs. I've seen it. If you like, you can get a recipe from her site that's " a top-secret rib recipe that will have your mouth watering. Oprah called Quincy Jones in Paris to get permission to use it. " The recipe was made on her show last month. http://www.oprah.com/food/recipebox/recipes/recipes_20000630_qjribs.html And furthermore, clearly the only reason she doesn't eat dead cows (if even that is true) is for her own self interest ie. to avoid the dangerous diseases associated with eating dead cows - madcow, e.coli etc. It aint ethical. That " one animal at a time " story is part of Howard's schtick. He told it again at the Congress so I presume he is not aware of the " ribs " episode or her current eating habits. Oprah is not a martyr or hero to me and I don't hold my breath waiting for her to give up eating various species. > >perhaps Oprah can stop eating chicken, > >since she has already given up on eating burgers. > > >Maynard > > Hello Maynard, > I personally spoke with Howard Lyman about Oprah and he stated that she had indeed given up pork. Guest guest
Dear Anji and friends, We are all on our own individual paths and we must all come to the conclusions that life is sacred in our own time- if even at all during this lifetime. It always amazes me that some of my vegan, animal rights friends are so angry towards others that are only doing and living exactly as they were a few years or even months before. At Animal Rights 2000, an excellent speaker noted that the crowd had a " mob mentality " about meat eaters and he squelched the crowds righteousness by asking who among them had never tasted meat. Not one hand in the large group was raised, and everyone was immediately silent. When I was 20 years old, (10 years ago) I met vegetarians at the health food store- and even though my health was horrible, I thought that they were weird hippie freaks and what else was there to eat? That was the way that I was raised and that was my social conditioning. I remember actually thinking that I could never and would never choose to live like that. When I quit eating beef in 1993- it had absolutely nothing to do with ethics- it had to do with the fact that I had seen footage of dead cows being dropped into their own fecal matter and hoisted back up on the conveyor line, and people had died from eating this meat. - Kinda like Oprahs own self interest. I still wore leather- because Everyone does- Right? I *slowly* started to have realizations and awareness about the plight of the animals- but generally pushed it to the back of my mind. I finally read John Robbin's Diet for a New America in January- and that did it. I am a complete vegetarian and mostly all vegan- and I don't wear or purchase any animal products. I have changed my life and career plans- as I am now writing a book about this experience, that I hope to *lovingly* share with others. My husband still eats meat- but has cut back- and I don't plan on kicking our marriage to the curb because he doesn't *now* have the same awareness that I " know " I have. Anyone holding their breath for me to have made the changes I have made- would have died a long time ago. The only folks we can be responsible for are our own selves and I don't know a single vegan that had been motivated to change because of hate and intolerance. So, even if Oprah had only given up beef, and only for her own self interests, I think that's great. I was first motivated to become a vegetarian for my own health and it was only then that I began to have a greater awareness for the sacredness of all life. We are all into self preservation as our first priority- Whether or not someone wants to admit to it is another thing. Oprah may not be a Hero because she has not adopted your and my philosophies on nutrition and animals, but Oprah is a Hero because she refused to settle with the cattle ranchers- She could have easily written a check and washed her hands of it- but she didn't. She fought. She brought the matter to international attention. She said that she would no longer eat beef. She's a hero. It's also true that Oprah's absolutely all-time favorite author, Alice Walker, (who loves all animals) *must* have some personal influence with her- again- we all come through our own path in our own time, and just because someone else isn't at the same mile marker is no reason to show hate- but love them along- just as it was love that motivated us to be different. Guest guest
Thank you Susan for that great posting....I agree....we create peace by living peace, not by screaming at everyone to be peaceful. Take care, Jeff
Guest guest
Yes, thank you from me also, Susan. I think one of the problems our vegetarian movement suffers from is an image of extremism, and summary judgment of those who may simply be unaware of all the facts as immoral. I think the most effective way to " convert " people to the vegetarian viewpoint is present the facts and then let the individual's own conscience guide him to the right choice. As Robert Altman put it, " You can't change people's ideas through rhetoric but by altering their way of looking at things. " Or, as Gandhi put it, " The correct way for the people to spread vegetarianism is to reason out its beauties, which should be exhibited in their lives.
