Greetings Vegans,

I have just bought my first jar of Sesame Tahini. It is extremely bitter!!!

I got it at Krogers, but it is so awful I'm wondering if it's spoiled. The

oil had separated so I stirred it.. was this wrong? Can anyone enlighten me

on any recipes or uses for Sesame Tahini? Is there any way to make it

palatable? Thanks! Sherry

Tahini IS more bitter than something like peanut butter. One good

thing to make with it is hommus, which is basically chick peas

(garbanzo beans), tahini, garlic and lemon juice. I don't know the

actual recipe, but I'm sure you could find one somewhere on the web,

or in a vegan or vegetarian cookbook. I also like to make veggie

sandwiches with tahini spread on the bread, like a sandwich with

lettuce or sprouts with sliced onions and tomatoes or avacado, or any

combo of vegetables you can think of that would be good on a

sandwich.

I think these tahini-veggie sandwiches are really good. I think the

onion compliments the taste of the tahini. I've also noticed that

certain brands of tahini are better than others. I've bought some

brands that are really runny and oily, and I don't like those as much

as the kind that has a thicker consistency. Tahini is a good source

of protien.

Tahini is an acquired taste, when I bought my first jar, I didn't like it at

first - but soon came to love the stuff. You have to stir it up a lot when

you first open the jar - it helps to turn it upside down a few minutes before

opening. It's great on pumpernickel bread & use it as mayo on sandwiches -

it's great with tomatoes & cucumbers. Experiment a little & enjoy :)

Peace,

Alicia

Hi Sherry,

Go to http://www.vegweb.com/ and type in tahini. You'll find some good things to

do with tahini there.

Hi Sherry;

I find tahini bitter too. I have always figured that was just the way it

tastes. I don't use it in anyway that I taste it directly, only IN things. I

use it instead of oil in my salad dressing and the nutty flavour works really

well in that. I also use it in homous or as a margarine substitute in baking.

As long as it is in things, not the way I would use peanut butter on rice cakes

with jam, I find it's flavour is dandy!
