Please Help Stop the N.J. Black Bear Hunt

For the past 30 years, black bear hunting has been banned in New Jersey.

However, on June 22, the New Jersey Fish & Game Council finalized a proposal

to allow the hunting of black bears in New Jersey, citing an increased

number of human-bear conflicts, despite the availability of effective and

humane bear-management programs. Beginning in September, the agency wants to

allow trophy hunters to kill 350 bears each year - nearly three-quarters of

the entire bear population in New Jersey!

In response to this proposal, on June 26, State Assembly member Christopher

Bateman and State Senator Louis Bassano introduced the Black Bear Protection

Bill, legislation that would make New Jersey's black bears a protected

species. The Black Bear Protection Bill had wide public support and passed

the Senate by a vote of 31 to 7! Yet, John Gibson (R-Cape May), chair of the

powerful Assembly Agricultural and Natural Resources Committee, has decided

not to allow a vote or hold public hearings on legislation to end bear hunts

in New Jersey on the grounds that the bill lacks legislative support. We

need your help to get the Black Bear Protection Bill passed before the hunts

begin in September.

Please call Governor Christine Whitman immediately and ask her to postpone

the bear hunt until after the New Jersey legislature reconvenes in September

and has time to vote on the Black Bear Protection Bill. Please get your

friends and family to do the same. Governor Whitman has the power to stop

the hunts and the majority of New Jersey citizens want to protect the bears.

Also, Assembly member John Gibson refuses to post the Black Bear Protection

Bill for a hearing in the Assembly Agriculture Committee. Please contact

Assembly member Gibson and ask him to hold a hearing in the Assembly

Agriculture Committee on the Black Bear Protection Bill as soon as possible

so that the bill can go to the legislative floor for a vote before the hunts

begin.

Urge General Mills to End Circus Sponsorship

General Mills sponsors the UniverSoul Circus and Circo Mundial. Both

circuses use chimps, elephants, tigers, and other animals who are " rented "

from animal suppliers, or they hire independent animal acts and trainers.

Visit www.Circuses.com for specific info about each circus. Please write a

polite letter to General Mills and ask that it immediately discontinue

sponsorship of both these circuses. Ask that in the future, it sponsor only

animal-free circuses.

Colorado Springs Airport Stops Killing Coyotes

A few weeks ago, we reported that Colorado Springs Airport began trapping

and killing coyotes in order to prevent the animals from wandering onto busy

airfields. Thanks to your letters, pressure from citizens groups, and the

threat of a federal lawsuit, the Colorado Springs Airport has agreed to halt

the coyote-trapping program for a period of 30 days. During the moratorium,

representatives from a coalition of citizens groups will meet with airport

officials to discuss nonlethal methods for keeping coyotes away from airport

property.

Please send letters and e-mail messages of support to Colorado Springs

Airport thanking them for issuing a moratorium on the coyote-trapping

program and urging them to permanently end the trapping program by working

with coyote advocacy groups and experts to develop an effective, humane

coyote-control program for the airport:

Ask Starbucks to Offer Soymilk at All Its Locations

Coffee lovers who don't or can't drink milk know that they can count on

finding soy milk at their favorite Starbucks. But unfortunately, Starbucks

outlets in malls and airports, as well as Barnes & Noble cafés that serve

Starbucks coffee, do not offer this option.

Please send polite letters to Starbucks and Barnes & Noble asking them to

put soy milk on the menu. Some points that you may wish to make in your

letter:

· Soy milk has gone mainstream. Supermarket sales of soy milk increased by

60 percent for the 12-month period that ended in February, and most grocery

stores now stock numerous alternatives to dairy foods. Health-conscious

consumers choose soy milk over cow's milk, because soy foods can reduce

harmful cholesterol levels and help ward off cancer and heart disease.

· Soy milk is a healthy option for the tens of millions of

Americans‹including the majority of African, Asian, and Hispanic

Americans‹who lack the enzyme needed to digest milk sugar.

Lactose-intolerant people who consume dairy foods can experience severe

stomach cramps, diarrhea, and gas, and many avoid drinks containing milk,

such as lattes, altogether for that reason.

· Soy milk is also cow-friendly. On today's factory farms, cows are treated

as milk machines and kept constantly pregnant so that they'll keep producing

milk. Their female babies are added to the dairy herd or slaughtered for the

rennet in their stomachs (which is used to make cheese). The males are sold

to the notoriously cruel veal industry, where they are chained inside tiny

crates barely larger than their bodies and kept in total darkness. For more

information about the dairy industry and the numerous alternatives to dairy

foods, see www.MilkSucks.com.

Please send your letters to:

Please also write to Host Marriott Services. Many of the Starbucks outlets

in malls and airports are franchised to this company.
