1.GEORGE MAGAZINE ARTICLE ON ANIMAL RESEARCH SLANTED

SOURCE: In Defense Of Animals http://www.idausa.org/

BACKGROUND:

This article in George magazine, well-read by politicians, glorifies

Marilyn Carroll and leaves readers terrified of " animal rights

extremists. "

http://www.georgemag.com/xp6/George/Features/900/Monkeys.xml

The article glorifies vivisector Marilyn Carroll and leave readers

terrified and outraged at animal rights " extremists. " This is a

magazine that politicians do read, so please, please respond. It has

photos on each page (including one of a caged primate).

Here's what U.S. Surgical's front group " Americans for Medical

Progress " says about it:

GEORGE MAGAZINE LOOKS AT ANIMAL RIGHTS WAR ON RESEARCH

The September issue of George Magazine features a chilling article

about the ongoing vicious animal activist campaign against Dr.

Marilyn Carroll of the University of Minnesota. The edition is just

hitting news stands now. The article, " Monkeys in the Middle, " may

be read online at the George Magazine website:

http://www.georgemag.com/xp6/George/Features/900/Monkeys.xml

The website is also running a e-forum in which comments about the

article may be made.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Please Express your disappointment with their one-sided and alarmist

article and ask that a less biased article presenting a more balanced

view of animal experimentation and animal activists in general, and

Marilyn Carroll's research in particular, appear in their next issue.

2.MAINE CAT DROWNED BY LEWISTON POLICE DEPARTMENT -SAMPLE LETTER

SOURCE: In Defense Of Animals http://www.idausa.org/

Courtesy of Chelsea Sharon

In December, 1999, former police officer John Parkin, who worked for

the Lewiston Police Department in Lewiston, Maine for seven months,

received word that a cat had been hit by a car. When he and his

field training officer (a superior) Mark Day went to investigate,

they found an injured cat who was alive but appeared to have his back

legs broken. They then put the cat in a crate and brought it to the

police department. Sgt. Cornelio and Officer Day discussed what to

do, and finally Day told Parkin to drive towards Lincoln Street where

they arrived at the Androscoggin River, and then Day told him to tip

the crate and let the cat fall into the river. The cat tried to swim

and was churning in the water and finally drowned.

The state veterinarian has stated that this kind of behavior is

illegal and should be prosecuted. Police departments, upon finding

injured animals, must contact an animal control officer, and if one

is not on duty (as Parkin indicated was the case that day), they CAN

NOT take matters into their own hands. Parkin has since resigned

from the police force and feels horribly about the incident.

On Monday, a public meeting was held at City Hall in Lewiston to

determine whether the police department should receive accreditation.

In order to achieve accreditation, the police department must qualify

as an exemplary organization, one that has met over 436 specific

standards and achieves the highest standards of competence.

Obviously, the Lewiston Police Department does not deserve this high

honor. Not only has the LPD engaged in animal cruelty, but Parkin

also reports anti-gay, racist and anti-Semitic behavior. One

sergeant considered himself a Nazi. Parkin was told to falsify

reports and hold a flashlight while a superior beat up a suspect.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Please write to or call the accreditation committee and tell them how

you feel. The contact information is as follows:

SAMPLE LETTER:

Committee Members:

I am writing in reference to the December, 1999 incident in which

former police officer John Parkin, who worked for the Lewiston Police

Department in Lewiston, Maine received word that a cat had been hit

by a car. When he and his field training officer (a superior) Mark

Day went to investigate, they found an injured cat who was alive but

appeared to have his back legs broken. The cat was put in a crate

and brought it to the police department. Officer Day told Parkin to

drive to the Androscoggin River and let the cat fall into the river.

The cat tried to swim and was churning in the water and finally

drowned.

I find this behavior absolutely reprehensible. The cat was suffering

to begin with and to be forced to suffer more and die such a slow,

horrendous death is horrible. The cat should have been lucky to

be " rescued " by a man of the law. Instead these police officers acted

like the people they are supposed to protect others from.

I look forward to hearing your opinion regarding this very serious

matter.

Sincerely,

FOR MORE INFORMATION:

Check out the Lewiston Sun Journal website and

look for the Friday, August 11 issue. There is also an article about

the accreditation process in the Friday, August 18 issue of the LSJ,

and there is an article about the protest on the Tuesday, August 22

issue.

Or, you can call (207) 926-4782 for more information. Thank you.

3.URGE SWIFT RETURN OF INDIAN BABY ELEPHANT - SAMPLE LETTER

SOURCE: http://www.peta-online.org/alert/00/52.html

BACKGROUND:

Jaya, a 3-year-old elephant, suffered neck injuries and was paralyzed

in half of her body after being kept in the back of a pick-up truck

for four days as she was transported across Northern India. Jaya was

on her way to Tokyo as a gift to Japan from India's Defense Minister

George Fernandes. After two days of traveling in cold weather, Jaya

collapsed and could not get up. It took two more days to get her to a

veterinarian. Jaya had not been allowed off the truck for the entire

four-day journey. When she finally arrived at the Lucknow Zoo to

receive treatment, she was lifted from the truck by a crane and given

glucose intravenously. Previous to Jaya, India had presented Japan

with three other elephants.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Please write to the president of India and ask him to return Jaya to

her mother as soon as possible. Explain that the type of abuse Jaya

suffered is inexcusable, especially since Jaya is still a baby and is

too young to be separated from her family. Ask him to prevent any

more tragedies like this one by prohibiting the export of elephants.

Please send your letters to:

4.HELP PASS DISSECTION CHOICE POLICY AT U. OF DAYTON - SAMPLE LETTER

SOURCE: PETA http://www.peta-online.org/alert/00/70.html

BACKGROUND:

Biology students at the University of Dayton are working on a passing

a dissection choice policy but are facing resistance from university

officials. Sophisticated computer simulations, videodiscs, and models

have all proven to be effective alternatives to dissecting animals;

in fact, studies show that students who use alternatives to

dissection perform as well as or better than students who dissect.

Students around the world are asserting their right to an education

that doesn't violate their ethical principles, and more and more

colleges are implementing choice policies that give students the

right to choose alternatives to dissection.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Please ask the University of Dayton to do the same. Contact:

Paul Morman

Dean of Arts and Sciences

O'Reilly Hall, Room 110A

University of Dayton

Dayton, OH 45401-0800

E-Mail: morman@m...

Fax: 937-285-2615

SAMPLE LETTER:

Mr. Morman:

I am writing to urge you to pass a dissection choice policy for your

students. Students around the world are asserting their right to an

education that doesn't violate their ethical principles, and more

and

more colleges are implementing choice policies that give students the

right to choose alternatives to dissection. I request you do the same.

Thank you for your time.

7.ATTENTION WISCONSIN DOG OWNERS!

ALERT: Dog Theft/Wisconsin/8-23-00

tsaf@c... (May Hall) writes:

Just to warn those in NW Wisconsin and other parts of the state,

I had a puppymiller come to my garage sale near Chetek last Sat.

He was remarking on my Schipperkes and after some conversation,

he admitted to *making his living from selling dogs* and having

several breeds including JRTs and Labs. I told my vet about it

and they said there had been a rash of dognappings recently. The

local HS said the same. Mostly small breeds such as Poms. What

a great cover; going to garage sales to see what dogs people have.

Fenced yards just make theft easier. I have been keeping my dogs

in the house during the day for the duration. Please spread the word

and watch your dogs closely!

8.UPDATE RE: BEARS IN CHINA - NOT GOOD

SOURCE: ANIMAL GUARDIAN ANGELS

Linda Genteel wrote:

This is not good news, but at least it is a start to end the industry

for good.

Dear Linda and APASFA,

Thank you for forwarding the article entitled 'Bears rescued from

exploitation' to WSPA. The rescue of these three bears is good news.

However, these bears were being kept illegally for bile extraction.

There is still a legal bear farming industry operating in China. The

owners of registered bear bile farms have state licences that allow

them to keep Asiatic black bears and legally extract their bile, in

order to sell it within China.

Therefore, unfortunately, the following statement from the article is

completely untrue:

" Collecting bile from live bears has been banned by the Chinese

Government... "

You may have heard of the agreement that Animals Asia Foundation (AAF)

has arranged with the authorities in the Sichuan Province, China.

This agreement will allow AAF to re-home 500 bears from the worst

bear farms, when these farms are closed during the next 2-5 years.

This is good news for these bears.

However, WSPA's investigations of the Chinese bear bile farms in 1999

and 2000, has revealed that several of the large bear bile farms have

expansion plans. One farm, in particular, had 800 bears in February

2000 and plans to have 1000 bears by the end of 2000. Therefore,

China has no intention of bringing an end to this industry.

Currently, there is an international ban on the trade in bear parts

and products (including bile). However, China has a surplus of bear

bile. Much of this bile is being used in in-essential products such

as bear wine and tonics. At some stage in the future China may try

to obtain legal international trade for this product. Dr Fan

Zhiyong, the official in charge of the Chinese CITES (Convention on

International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora)

Management Authority, has stated that China would like to export bear

bile to consumers in Japan, Korea and other countries.

Therefore, the reality of the Chinese bear farming industry is not

good. We need to maintain pressure on China to prevent them gaining

legal international trade in bear bile and other products, and to

totally end the bear farming industry in China.

I hope this clarifies the situation.

(WSPA)

9.SUPPORT BILL TO PREVENT WORLD BANK LOANS FROM HARMING ANIMALS -

SAMPLE LETTER

SOURCE: PETA http://www.peta-online.org/alert/00/58.html

BACKGROUND:

California Representative Chris Cox has sponsored a bill that would

prevent U.S. funds from being used on World Bank projects that harm

the environment. Aside from damaging fragile ecosystems, such

projects often involve livestock development that results in misery

for farm animals who endure horrible conditions and painful

procedures without painkillers. These projects also lead to the

significantly higher risks for heart disease, cancer, stroke, and

diabetes associated with meat-eating.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Please write to your representative and ask that he or she co-sponsor

H.R. 2969 and actively support its passage through Congress on the

grounds that it will benefit animals, the environment, and human

health. If you are unsure of who your representative is, please enter

your state and zip code on the following Web page

(http://www.house.gov/writerep/) to obtain their phone number and

mailing address.

A simple letter stating " Please co-sponsor H.R. 2969 and actively

support its passage through Congress " is sufficient.
