2.SWANS LOSE BATTLE AGAINST HUNTERS - SAMPLE LETTER

SOURCE: HUMANELINES

BACKGROUND:

In HUMANElines Issues #87 & #96, we reported on the U.S. Fish &

Wildlife Services (FWS) proposal to establish a permanent sport

hunting season on the extremely rare Trumpeter Swans in the Pacific

Flyway. This proposal was made in order to accommodate a contingent

of Tundra Swan hunters, who often mistakenly shoot the protected

Trumpeter Swans because their profile in flight is almost

indistinguishable from that of the Tundra Swan. In order to protect

the Trumpeter Swan, the FWS would have had to close Tundra Swan

season. Instead, on August 21st, the USFWS announced that it WILL

now permit killing of Trumpeter Swans in conjunction with Tundra

Swans in Utah, Montana, and Nevada. This decision comes as a

perilous blow to the survival of the Trumpeter Swans, whose future

existence relies on the birds' ability to expand their migratory

range. Because nearly every Trumpeter Swan who tries to migrate

through the Pacific flyway is shot by Tundra Swan hunters, the

likelihood for species survival looks very slim. The FWS' pro-

killing position has alarmed wildlife and animal welfare groups, and

has prompted Colorado's Biodiversity Legal Foundation and The Fund

for Animals to petition the FWS to list Trumpeter Swans as threatened

or endangered under the federal Endangered Species Act.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Please contact the Fish and Wildlife Service by September 8th to ask

that they withdraw their decision to permit hunting of Trumpeter

Swans. Contact: Jon Andrew, USFWS Migratory Bird Management Office,

Arlington Square, Room 634, 4401 N. Fairfax Drive, Arlington, VA

22203 / email: jon_andrew .

SAMPLE LETTER:

I am writing to request that you withdraw your decision to permit

hunting of Trumpeter Swans. The future existence of this bird relies

on the birds' ability to expand their migratory range. Because

nearly every Trumpeter Swan who tries to migrate through the Pacific

flyway is shot by Tundra Swan hunters, the likelihood for species

survival looks very slim.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

3.PROTEST CAPTIVE DOLPHINS IN TEXAS - SAMPLE LETTER

SOURCE: lythic489

BACKGROUND:

Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi, Texas plans to add an $11.5

million

dolphin exhibit to its eight-year-old facility. The two-level exhibit

will

consist of an outdoor pool, a tiered spectator seating, and an

underwater

viewing area. The exhibit will not have the dolphins performing but

visitors

will be able to touch and feed the dolphins from the edge of the

pool. This

expansion will move the aquarium away from its original mission that

included education and the rehabilitation of injured mammals to one

of

public entertainment.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Please contact the Texas State Aquarium and express your disapproval

of its

proposal to add a captive dolphin exhibit. Write:

Mr. Tom Schmid, Executive Director

Texas State Aquarium

2710 North Shore

Corpus Christi, TX 78402

Fax 512-881-3732

tschmid

SAMPLE LETTER:

I am writing in reference to the proposed plan of adding a dolphin

exhibit to your facility. I would appreciate if you would reconsider

this plan and not hold dolphins captive as part of a petting and

feeding zoo. There are many risks for both people and the dolphins.

Physical injuries to humans, such as lacerations and infections, have

been well documented in petting area settings. These injuries occur

due to the dolphin's natural feeding behavior. There is also the

problem of Disease caused by contaminated fish, and nutrition

problems such as obesity and malnutrition that exist in many

facilities where dolphins are housed and fed. Interaction with humans

can cause the animal undue stress, making the animal more likely to

act aggressively toward other dolphins in the pool. By offering the

public the opportunity to feed the dolphins, you are also spreading

misinformation. Studies have concluded that feeding wild dolphins

alters their natural behavior in ways that are harmful to individual

marine mammals and marine mammal stocks.

I urge you to continue the strong educational program at the aquarium

with activities that are attractive to young people. There is no

need to hold wildlife prisoner. Young visitors will make frequent

visits if they unwittingly learning about marine life through videos,

interactive games, recorded marine mammal sounds, and robotic

versions of marine mammals.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

SOURCE: ENGLANDGAL

To honor the millennial year, which has been declared The Year of the

Humane Child, The Fund for Animals is sponsoring essay contests for

students at the Elementary, Middle, and High School levels. In each

age group a first prize of a $100 US savings bond and a second prize

of a $50 US savings bond will be awarded. Elementary School (grades

4-5): write an essay of 200 words or less as if you were a deer

during deer hunting season. Middle school (grades 6-8); write an

essay of 500 words or less as if you were a deer during deer hunting

season. High school (grades 9-12); write an essay of 750 words or

less answering the question, Why should animal cruelty laws protect

dogs and cats but not animals who live in the wild? Take into account

that animals in the wild have the same sensibility to fear and pain

as companion animals, i.e. similar sensory organs, nervous systems,

and brains. Elementary and Middle school entries will be judged on

language skills, empathy, and humane sensibility. High school

entries will be judged on the use of evidence and logical argument,

language skills, and humane sensibility.
