Is patent leather really leather? It doesn't look like leather (looks synthetic), and the name seems to imply that it's not leather (more like a " patented " imitation), but I like to be sure and not make assumptions. I looked up patent leather in my encyclopedia, and it says that it is buffed leather that is heavily glazed and then several coats of a thick, oily varnish added to make it so stiff and shiny.
