SAMPLE LETTER:

I am contacting you in regard to the Royal Hanneford " Back to School "

Circus, to be held from August 25 through August 27, 2000. I

understand that elephant rides are being advertised for this

particular event.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that the American

Zoo and Aquarium Association recently advised its member zoos to

discontinue elephant rides because of the inherent danger involved.

In addition, insurance companies recognize that elephant rides are

risky and the US Department of Labor ranks elephant handling as the

nation¹s deadliest profession. In addition to the dangers, I

believe

elephant rides to be very cruel for the animal involved. Elephants

should be living freely in the wild, not held in captivity to have

people riding on their backs.

I urge you to discontinue your support of circuses which use live

animals. If you do not you are putting your community at risk, as

well as contributing to the inhumane treatment of animals.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Each click generates a $0.09 donation from today's sponsors to the

Spay-Neuter Assistance Program. 250 clicks pays to spay or neuter a

single dog or cat. For every dog spayed or neutered, 67,000 homeless

puppies are prevented in just six years. For every cat spayed or

neutered, 420,000 homeless kittens are prevented in just seven years.

4.UPDATE SHIPYARD CATS

SOURCE: GREATANDSMALL

UPDATE: STOP NAVY'S ERADICATION OF FERAL CATS

The protest in Norfolk, VA organized by Alley Cat Allies and the

Meower Power Feral Cat Coalition was quite a hit! Passerby honked to

show their support for the shipyard cats and local television crews

as well as The Virginian Pilot covered the story (visit

http://www.pilotonline.com/news/nw0829por.html). Subsequent

conversations with military personnel have also indicated that the

protest really brought the issue to the forefront of the NNSY's

attention. So to those of you who protested, THANK YOU for your

efforts!

Also, THANK YOU to all of you who have been so diligently making phone

calls, writing letters, and sending faxes and e-mail in support of the

cats. Your hard work is paying off!

On Monday, August 28th at 9:30 A.M., the primary caretaker of the cats

was given official permission to resume feeding the cats at the

shipyard. That same morning, Alley Cat Allies was contacted at 10:50

A.M. (10 minutes before the planned protest) and invited to a meeting

with NNSY personnel. However, we were unable to obtain answers to our

questions regarding whether or not Captain Hugel would be in

attendance at the meeting and whether or not the NNSY was continuing

to formulate a service agreement with the U.S. Department of

Agriculture Wildlife Services. We have since been told by the Public

Affair's Office that a meeting WOULD include Captain Mark Hugel, the

new commander. We have also been assured that the NNSY has yet to

sign any contract with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife

Services. At the upcoming meeting, Alley Cat Allies will have the

opportunity to present trap-neuter-return (TNR) as the preferred

method of managing the shipyard cats. From there, the NNSY will

decide which course of action to pursue. So, let's all keep our

fingers crossed for a good outcome for the cats!

5.OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY USES DOGS & CATS IN CLASS - SAMPLE LETTER

SOURCE: http://animalalertnews.com/

BACKGROUND:

January 11, 2000 Corvallis, OR

Students at Oregon State University (OSU) have been protesting that

school's purchase of 60 dogs and 20 cats for the School of Veterinary

Medicine. The animals are used to teach surgical techniques to

veterinary students, and then are killed. These are healthy animals

who do not need the procedures performed on them and most certainly

do not need to be killed.

OSU refuses to consider alternatives used by other more progressive

Veterinary Schools, including computer simulators, along with

assisting veterinarians doing actual needed surgeries on animals.

It is ironic that a school that teaches medical procedures to help

save animals, refuses to stop killing other animals when it is not

necessary.

School officials argue that the animals are obtained from shelters,

treated humanely, and would be euthanized anyway. The truth is, most

animals are obtained from " dealers " , who obtain them from a variety

of sources, many of which do not leave a paper trail. Some are

obtained from shelters, however many of the animals which wind up in

facilities like these are from questionable sources, including stolen

family pets.

Evoking memories of slave auctions in the deep South 150 years ago,

dealers regularly attend animal auctions to obtain many of the

animals they resell. The brutality at these auctions is shocking. We

will be adding an undercover video taken at an animal auction to this

site in the near future. Please check back.

The animals are often kept in horrid conditions until they are sold

and transported to schools or medical laboratories.

OSU purchased its animals from C.C. Baird, a dealer in Arkansas.

Read the report on C.C. Baird (http://animalalertnews.com/BAIRD-

AWI.htm) and you will quickly see that supplying animals to labs is a

multimillion dollar business where consideration of the animals' well

being, although mandated by law, is rarely enforced. OSU's purchase

and use of animals for its teaching labs helps perpetuate the horror

imposed on thousands of animals each year. This kind of business

actually encourages the proliferation of puppy mills and other shady

breeding operations.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

WRITE/CALL and ask that OSU discontinue using live animals in its

small animal surgery lab.

SAMPLE LETTER:

Mr. Risser:

I am outraged to learn that Oregon State University continues to kill

healthy animals to teach veterinary classes when there are more

humane alternatives such as computer simulators, along with assisting

veterinarians doing actual needed surgeries on animals. It is

terrible that a school that teaches medical procedures to help save

animals, refuses to stop killing other animals when it is not

necessary.

Please follow the example of more progressive Veterinary Schools and

stop the needless killing of animals.

Sincerely,

I rescued a 1 year old (at most), spayed, female tabby, from the yard

of an 80 year old cat rescuer, whose neighbors tied a rubber band

around the cats tail so tightly, that part of it attrophied and fell

off--they have also threatened to kill her. She is so friendly that

she goes up to them, even after this incident, which caused her a

great deal of pain. I have no more room at my house, and she is

being fostered cared by a friend, who also is out of room for more

cats. If you can help her--please call and leave a message at: : 201-

348-4173. I believe she has had her shots, when she was spayed

during the NJ low cost spay/neuter program. I can check this out

tomorrow night.

SAMPLE LETTER:

Dear Mr. Jouett:

I am very concerned over the recent deaths of two Six Flags

dolphins. My concern grew when I read your news release announcing

eight new baby animals at Marine World. Contrary to your news

release, displaying wild animals is not educational, nor is it

humane. It does not teach children about animals' natural behavior

in the wild.

Please stop your " for-profit " marine exhibits and release these

creatures to professional sanctuaries to prepare them for a return to

the wild. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

SOURCE: ANIMAL GUARDIANS

BACKGROUND:

Last year we took part in a letter writing campaign to the authorities

in Fuzhou - they listened and abandoned their plan to exterminate all

the dogs in the city. In the city of Zhongshan in Guangdong Province

the police have started a similar extermination plan. They are going

round all the buildings and beating the dogs to death - it makes no

difference if the animal is owned or a stray, ALL dogs must go.

We received this letter from a Zhongshan resident who for obvious

reasons wishes to remain anonymous: " I am desperate to talk to anybody

who is involve in any organization related to Animal Rights. I live

in China - now this the last week the horrible one. Zhongshan Govt.

is " cleaning up " all the dogs in the city! It means NO DOGS at all.

The sad thing is they do not put them to sleep " peacefully " but

terribly. They beat the dogs to death...this according to my

landlord and house keeper who saw it on TV News..I my self have 2

dogs and I had to move them to nearby village but even so, the

policemen or dog catcher may go there soon...at least sooner or

later. I called USA, United Nation even but none of them can help

for UN only deals with Humans while the APSCA deals only Inside USA.

I am writing to you for I am very desperate..not only for my dogs but

to all the animals. Is there anyway this organization can

investigate to this matter? I don't know how long this " clearing up "

for all life and do not endorse cruelty to animals.

2.KOREA WANTS TO IMPROVE NATIONAL IMAGE

SOURCE: PACAS

An article ran in a Korean newspaper stating that Korea wanted to

improve their national image. Perhaps some comments regarding Korea's

animal cruelty might be a good idea.

I am writing in reference to Korea's desire to improve their national

image. All I have been hearing about Korea lately is the horrible

treatment of animals, mainly dogs and cats, who are beaten, tortured,

cooked alive, etc. If Korea wants to improve their national image

perhaps the government could start enforcing the Korean Animal

Protection Act. Maybe then Korea will not be viewed as such an

uncompassionate country.

3.DOGS IN CHINA UNDER ATTACK

I don't know how long this " clearing up "

will finish for they only started last week... I am hoping to save

the lives of the dogs but I can do nothing! I hope I hear from you

very soon and Please advice me on what to do. Thank you very much. "

Zhongshan Police Department.

Xing Zhong Road #26

Zhongshan, Guangdong, PRC.

Dear Madam/Sir:

I am very concerned about the issue of the " Notice to Kill

Dogs " in Zhongshan City. Today, after twenty years of Open Door

Policy when China is trying to align itself with international

economic, legal, social, cultural and ecological standards, we

couldn't help but be worried about the negative publicity this

impractical, unreasonable and unscientific decision will bring to

Zhongshan City, Guangdong Province and the People's Republic of

China.

" The Notice " has attracted the attention of numerous animal

protection, animal welfare organizations and the media both in and

outside China. If it is carried out it will definitely be condemned

by the international community.

I hereby appeal to the government of Zhongshan to reconsider the

notice to kill dogs and spare thousands of innocent lives. Please

accept our sincere gratitude for your consideration of this appeal.

Sincerely,

4.COUGAR HUNT ALERT

SOURCE: ANIMAL LIFE

BACKGROUND:

Your comments needed immediately re. proposal to slaughter cougars in

NE and SW Oregon ODFW is proposing a study of why elk herds are

declining in NE Oregon (hunters are whining they aren't killing as

many elk as they used to...) by killing up to 75% of the cougars in

two study areas in NE and SW Oregon. All the cougars in the study

areas will be

captured and radio collared, and then systematically tracked

down with dogs and killed.

Please immediately contact ODFW and let them know how you

feel about using one million dollars of your tax money on this

stupid plan. COMMENT DEADLINE IS SEPT. 25!!

SAMPLE LETTER:

I am writing to voice my opposition to the proposal to slaughter

cougars in NE and SW Oregon. As a concerned citizen, I do not want

my tax dollars used for this inhumane, useless plan. Studies such as

this have been done before and the results proved to be unreliable.

Also, a bill asking for such a study was rejected by the legislature

last session, however the study seems to have been undertaken inspite

of the fact that the people would not approve and the

legislature didn't either.

I urge you to implement the " no action' alternative.Thank you for

your time.

Sincerely,
