COP -SAMPLE LETTER SOURCE: silvar (Arlene Silva) FORWARDED MESSAGE: Please read this eye witness account - contact information will be provided at the end of this report: On Monday, September 21st Daniel Rivera decided to take his 9yr old son (Kyle) and his father (Rev. Raphael Rivera) to lunch. It was late afternoon and the group decided to eat their lunch at a forest preserve in Chicago Heights, near where they live. It was an area known as the 26th street woods, the entrance sign read Sauk Woods. They had the wooded area to themselves except for one gentleman washing his car. They sat at a picnic table and began to eat, enjoying the woods which overlook a lake. Moments later they observed a Rottweiler dog walking slowly towards them. The Reverend and Daniel offered the dog some french fries and the dog ate them quickly. Kyle also gave the dog some french fries. They observed the dog was a female, and her teats were protruding and swollen. She appeared to either be pregnant or currently nursing. The dog was walking slowly as it went toward another picnic table approximately 50ft away. The dog appeared to be alone. At this time a Forest Preserve Police car arrived and a police officer exited the vehicle. The officer looked toward Daniel and his family and asked if they had seen a dog in the area. Daniel replied " over there " and pointed to the dog sniffing near the neighboring picnic table. The officer then walked over toward the dog and stood on top of the picnic table. The dog began to slowly walk away. At this time the officer removed his handgun from its holster and shot the dog in the stomach as Daniel and his family watched in horror. The dog kept walking and then sat down near a neighboring " outhouse " . At this time another Forest Preserve Police squad arrived with three officers inside. The officers exited the squad, met with the officer on scene at which time all four then went to where the dog was now laying. As the officers walked by Daniel's family, Daniel asked the officer " why did you do that? She is not bothering anyone " The officer replied " I don't trust dogs " and walked on. The same officer who originally shot the dog then again displayed his handgun and shot the dog in the head. The four officers then carried the dog into the woods out of view. Moments later the four reappeared without the dog, laughing and joking with each other. The officer who did the shooting was observed saying to the others " I don't think we'll do a report on this one. " Daniel and his family then left without finishing their lunch and attempted to calm Kyle as he was crying and walking towards the car. The gentleman who was washing his car nearby walked over to them and asked " do you believe that? " The man asked if the boy was alright. Daniel asked the man if he was going to report the incident but the man stated he did not want to get involved. My father-in-law, Reverend Raphael Rivera related this story to me with tears in his eyes. He had just returned from a Church convention in Michigan (had been gone for about 4 days) and stated the incident stayed in his mind the entire trip. Needless to say I have reported the incident to: the South Suburban Humane Society and a member of a Rottweiler rescue team. An investigator " Lynn " is now looking into the matter and has been extremely helpful during this stressful time. I have spoken with my brother-in-law Daniel who states that his son Kyle has been traumatized by the incident. Daniel has asked me to pursue a lawyer on his behalf, which I am currently researching. The bottom line is that a police officer endangered the lives of a family by discharging a firearm in close proximity, shot a stray dog (possibly pregnant) which posed no visible threat whatsoever and disposed of the dog by throwing it into a lake where people fish regularly. I am a supporter of law enforcement, but some serious action needs to be taken here! please see http://www.RecycledRotts.org/abuse.html for a tribute to this innocent dog as well as additional photographs of the shooting and of the body when it was taken for autopsy to remove the bullet... WHAT YOU CAN DO: If you find this story offensive we ask that you write a kind letter to the following gentlemen requesting that they fully investigate this crime, and prosecute to the fullest extent of the law, the offending officer. SEND LETTERS TO: Forest Preserve District: Joseph Nevius, Superintendent 536 N. Harlem Avenue River Forest, IL 60305-1999 Cook County Board of Commissioners: John H. Stroger, Jr. President 118 N. Clark Street, Room 537 Chicago, IL 60602-1304 312-443-6400 SAMPLE LETTER: Dear Sir: I am writing in reference to an incident that happened on September 21, 2000 at at a forest preserve in Chicago Heights known as the 26th street woods. A family was having a picnic in the area that day and has relayed an eyewitness account that I found horrifying. The family, which consisted of a young boy, his father and grandfather, who is a Reverend, were feeding table scraps to a gentle, stray dog who appeared pregnant and was obviously very friendly. According to the eyewitness account a Forest Preserve Police car arrived and a police officer exited the vehicle. The officer looked toward the boy and his family and asked if they had seen a dog in the area. The boy replied " over there " and pointed to the dog sniffing near the neighboring picnic table. The officer then walked over toward the dog and stood on top of the picnic table. The dog began to slowly walk away. At this time the officer removed his handgun from its holster and shot the dog in the stomach as the boy and his family watched in horror. The dog kept walking and then sat down near a neighboring " outhouse " . At this time another Forest Preserve Police squad arrived with three officers inside. The officers exited the squad, met with the officer on scene at which time all four then went to where the dog was now laying. " Not only did these men of the law shoot and kill a gentle animal, but they jeopardized the lives of a family by discharging a firearm in close proximity and traumatized a young boy. They also disposed the body of large, dead animal by throwing her into a lake where people fish regularly. As a compassionate and concerned citizen, I demand that this crime be investigated fully and that the offending officers are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I look foward to your reply. Today, after twenty years of Open Door Policy when China is trying to align itself with international economic, legal, social, cultural and ecological standards you must be concerned about the negative publicity this impractical, unreasonable and unscientific decision will bring to Zhongshan City, Guangdong Province and the People's Republic of China. " The Notice " has attracted the attention of numerous animal protection, animal welfare organizations and the media both in and outside China. If it is carried out it will definitely be condemned by the international community. I hereby ask you to use your influence and appeal to the government of Zhongshan to reconsider the notice to kill dogs and spare thousands of innocent lives. Please accept my sincere gratitude for your consideration of this appeal. The kangaroo, it seems, will have a different role at some Australian venues—on the menu. SOCOG is both allowing and promoting the consumption of kangaroo meat throughout the Olympic Village. It has appointed Jennice Kersh to establish a 200-seat branch of her restaurant, Edna's Table, in the media center, where her specialty of " rare " kangaroo will be served to visiting journalists. However, eating undercooked kangaroo meat can lead to severe illness as kangaroos can harbor a wide range of parasitic, bacterial, fungal and viral diseases, most of which are unapparent unless gross lesions are present on the animals. According to Des Sibraa, a lawyer and former chief food inspector for New South Wales (the site of the Olympics), " What meat inspectors can't pick up, because they do not look at the animal before it is killed, is whether the kangaroo was suffering from disease. " Health risks, coupled with great concern for the wild kangaroo populations, are causing increased alarm among those who oppose the government-sanctioned slaughter. The Australian kangaroo population is an estimated 25 million, including reds (the largest, and most desired for meat and hides), greys, wallaroos, and wallabies. Kangaroos were established as " game " meat in 1989 by the Australian government because their flesh could not meet domestic health standards. The decision was made without any consultation or representation by animal welfare or conservation groups. Kangaroos are primarily killed for their hides, which are used to make baseball gloves, sports shoes, etc; the meat is a byproduct not commonly consumed by average Australians, and instead is marketed as an exotic or " fad " product. In 1999 more than 2.6 million kangaroos were killed specifically for export markets, not counting those killed for sport or by random cruelty. The Australian government—which set an unfulfilled 1999 kill quota of 5.7 million—justifies the " culling " by claiming that too many kangaroo threaten sheep and cattle by competing for resources, despite a lack of scientific evidence to support such unrealistic claims. Sheep are the main culprit of land degradation but the evidence is ignored. Kangaroos are killed in the outback by professional shooters who go out each night in four-wheel-drive vehicles, using spotlights and high-powered rifles to slaughter the animals. The wounding rate could be as high as 15 percent, leaving kangaroos permanently mutilated and left to die slowly. Ex-kangaroo shooter David Nicholls writes in " The Case Against the Commercial 'Harvest' of Kangaroos " that " joeys are unceremoniously dragged out of their previously secure world (the pouch) by the hind legs and swung against a purposed hard object. One swing may be followed by another and yet another if the prior does not complete a death. " More than 1 million older offspring ( " joeys at foot " ) still dependent on their mothers die from starvation or predation when left orphaned. Private hunting is illegal but still commonplace. The kangaroos are eviscerated on the spot, the entrails left for feral animals such as foxes and pigs whose populations compete with the kangaroos and other ground-dwelling native fauna. The meat is exposed to dust, feces, maggots from fly infestations, urine from accidental bladder breakage, and other contaminants. David Obendorf, Ph.D., of the Scientific Advisory Board to the International Animal Health Body, made the following motion on June 3 at the Annual General Meeting of the Australian Wildlife Protection Council (AWPC): " The Council endorse an investigation into the governmental policy and procedures (state and federal) which relate to the meat hygiene, public health and animal welfare standards applied to Australian game meats with particular reference to kangaroos, wallabies and possums for both domestic consumption and the export trade. " John Auty, a former assistant director of the Bureau of Animal Health in Canberra and former Chief Commissioner for Land Conservation in the North Territory, will undertake this review. Regulation of the slaughter in each Australian state is promised but not delivered. Early last year, the Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service rejected calls for a reduced quota, and budget reductions have hampered proper enforcement of existing wildlife laws. According to Federal Minister for Environment Robert Hill, " Australian native wildlife is a renewable resource. If managed in an ecologically sustainable manner, wildlife can provide a perpetual source of economic benefits for all Australians. " The United States removed kangaroos from its list of threatened species in 1995, thereby removing important trade-related protection for kangaroos. Protests against the planned sale of kangaroo meat at the Olympic Games began in April and will continue until the Games begin in September. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Protest the sanctioning of kangaroo slaughter and meat marketing at the 2000 Olympic Games. SEND LETTERS TO: Contact Michael Knight, Minister for Olympics, Level 34, 1 Farrer Place, Sydney 2000, NSW, Australia; fax: 61-2-9228-4255; e-mail: knight Also contact the The Hon. Along with my concern for the wild kangaroo population, I am also concerned about the health risks involved with serving kangaroo meat. Eating undercooked kangaroo meat can lead to severe illness as kangaroos can harbor a wide range of parasitic, bacterial, fungal and viral diseases, most of which are unapparent unless gross lesions are present on the animals. The restaurant " Edna's Table " is planning to serve their speciality, " rare " kangaroo, to visiting journalists. Obviously the health risks must be taken into consideration. It is also very alarming to hear of the devastating affects hunting has on the kangaroos. The " wounding " rate caused by hunters is as high as 15 percent; 15 percent of the kangaroos are left permanently mutilated and must endure a slow, painful death. More than 1 million older offspring still dependent on their mothers die from starvation or predation when left orphaned. " You must realize that all of these situations are extremely inhumane and considered animal abuse. Until the use of kangaroo meat is stopped and these cruel hunts have been ended, I will not only boycott the Olympic Games held in Australia, I will boycott all products from your country, as well as any plans to visit Australia as a tourist. I will encourage my family, friends, and colleagues to do the same. Battery cages, debeaking, and forced molting are the inhumane practices most often inflicted on these animals by the egg industry. Battery cages: 97% of laying hens in the U.S. are kept in cages that measure 16 " x 18 " and house up to 6 hens. The animals are unable to turn around, spread their wings, or follow their natural instincts such as dust-bathing. This kind of environment breeds diseases such as Salmonella which can be spread to humans through eggs. Salmonella in eggs was associated with 28,645 illnesses and 79 deaths between 1985 and 1998. Debeaking is a painful procedure where the beak of a hen is seared off to prevent the pecking of other chickens crammed into the same cage. This often causes chronic pain and can prevent proper eating and drinking. Forced molting is a process in which the hens are denied food and sometimes water for up to 14 days. This causes a " forced molt " where the hens' feathers fall off. When given sustenance again, the hens lay larger eggs. As a result of receiving thousands of letters criticizing its treatment of laying hens, the United Egg Producers (UEP) is appointing an animal welfare advisory committee to change its current guidelines. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Now is the time to put added pressure on the egg industry. Write to Mr. Albert Pope, UEP president, and share your concerns for the inhumane practices and conditions endured by laying hens in the U.S. SEND LETTERS TO: Mr. Albert E. Despite regular water baths to treat an injured leg, 3-year-old Jaya had been sluggish over the past few months. Two weeks ago she stopped eating all solid food and began losing weight. After she died Tuesday, officials at Lucknow's Prince of Wales Zoological Gardens found that, besides her leg injury, she had broken three ribs when she fell on her side during the January trip. India intended to give the 1,055-pound orphan elephant to Japan. Jaya was chosen from a zoo in Gauhati, in northeastern Assam state, because she was young, tame and playful. But when R. L. Singh, wildlife director for the state of Uttar Pradesh, went to visit the elephant Tuesday morning, he said, ``I realized Jaya was not going to live for long. She lay still on her right side. She even had tears rolling down her face.'' `````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` 8.URGENT INFO FOR PEOPLE ADOPTING OUT ANIMALS THE FOLLOWING IS A FORWARDED MESSAGE. I HAVE NO FURTHER INFO THAN WHAT IS POSTED. FORWARDED MESSAGE: It has come to my attention through a friend (a former Bergen County resident and fellow rescue person) that ads have been placed in the Bergen Record and that area's local Pennysaver asking for unwanted animals. When called, they appear very simpatico and say they simply have room for animals that no one wants (yeah, right!) There is no address to check with. These people are elderly and seem totally on the up and up. They come in a beat up van and 'collect' the discarded and unwanted. After tracking these folks, the rescue friend says they are selling the animals to labs. There is no legal proof but they are being watched by the authorities. The point is, this method of getting animals is tried and true. It looks like a 'quick fix' and people are handing over their pets with no questions asked. There have been several people down thru the years who could win academy awards for being 'animal lovers' and turn out to be making quite a chunk of change on the backs of these poor animals. Bergen County is not so far from Rockland and Orange so these folks could turn up in our neck of the woods at any point. Please pass along this information to local newspapers and pennysavers.
