Guest guest
Help Stop U.S. Funds Being Used for Environmentally Damaging/Socially Destructive Projects Source-API(apiforanimals.org) Please forward! Congressman Christopher Cox (R-CA) has introduced the Ecosystem and Indigenous Peoples Protection Act (H.R. 2969), which will prohibit U.S. funds from being used on World Bank (WB) projects that harm the environment. The Act requires automatic reduction of U.S. payments to the WB if the WB approves a project that is likely to result in substantial environmental harm or significant involuntary resettlement. Numerous projects funded by the WB often involve livestock development that results in misery for farm animals who endure horrible conditions and painful procedures without painkillers. According to the World Bank, these livestock projects lead to greenhouse gases, desertification, deforestation, and land and water pollution. If passed, this bill will benefit animals, the environment, and human health and could possibly halt future livestock development loans from being approved. In addition, H.R. 2969 will give the U.S. a means to preserve the integrity of our own environmental policies. Please write to your representative and ask that he/she support and co-sponsor H.R. 2969. Here are some points you may wish to make to your Representative: Many environmentally destructive World Bank projects involve livestock development. For example, China was recently loaned $180 million from the World Bank to develop the cattle industry there. World Bank projects may violate human rights. One World Bank decision permitted the People's Republic of China to forcibly relocate 60,000 Chinese farmers into Tibet. U.S. taxpayers have the right to know where there tax dollars are going. Tax dollars should not be spent on activities that harm animals and the environment. Please take the following action: Write a letter to your Representative urging him/her to co-sponsor H.R. 2969, The Ecosystem and Indigenous Peoples Protection Act. You may mail or fax the letter. (The name of your Representative can be found at www.house.gov/writerep) and their fax numbers can be found by calling the Representative's office directly or by calling Federal Information at 800-688-9889.) " This bill, introduced by Representative Christopher Cox, will ensure that the World Bank will not use U.S. tax dollars to assist any Third World development projects that would have a significantly adverse environmental impact. Many environmentally destructive World Bank projects involve livestock development. For example, China was recently loaned $180 million from the World Bank to develop the cattle industry there. These animals endure miserable conditions and painful procedures without anesthesia. In addition, meat-eating endangers human health. It results in higher risks of heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes. Furthermore, World Bank projects may violate human rights. One World Bank decision permitted the People's Republic of China to forcibly relocate 60,000 Chinese farmers into Tibet. Please cosponsor and support H.R. 2969, which will prevent U.S. taxpayers from being forced to subsidize environmental destruction, animal misery, and violation of human rights.
