Sarah ------ Two pieces of legislation affecting various nonhuman great apes are winding their way through the U.S. Congress. The first is the Great Ape Conservation Act (technically known as H.R. 4320), which the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee has just addressed and which may thus come up for a vote on the senate floor within the next several weeks. The second is the Chimpanzee Health Protection, Improvement and Maintenance Act (the " CHIMP Act " -- S. 2725), which recently gained the full support of the Senate Health Education, Labor & Pensions Committee. While legislation these days is often imperfect, falling far short of basic protections, each of these bills reflects that more and more attention is being paid to the plight of the nonhuman great apes. We will report on developments as they occur, and we may ask you to write your U.S. legislator to help ensure that these bills are passed in a form which provides good, consistent protections.
