Source-API(apiforanimals.org) Pro-hunting coalitions recently succeeded in advancing federal legislation to protect hunting. H.R. 4790, " The Hunting Heritage Protection Act, " was passed by the House Resources Committee on July 26, 2000, despite opposition by the very agencies affected by the legislation -- the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, and the National Park Service. H.R. 4790 directs federal agencies to act " in a manner so as to support, promote, and enhance recreational hunting opportunities. " Another ominous element of H.R. 4790 is a stipulation for " No Net Loss of Hunting, " which directs the government to maintain, at the minimum, current levels of federal lands open to hunters. If Congress or future administrations attempt to bar hunting on any federal lands, for whatever reason, they would need to designate an equivalent portion of federal lands open for hunting elsewhere. Sponsors of the bill are pushing for a vote on H.R. 4790 in September.
