Guest guest Posted October 4, 2000 Report Share Posted October 4, 2000 Europe's Caged Hens to Test WTO Animal Welfare Rule LONDON, United Kingdom, October 2, 2000 (ENS) - The European Commission has announced an end to the cramped conditions suffered by hens housed in battery cages - row upon row of enclosures no bigger than a thick telephone directory designed to exploit the birds' egg production to the maximum. The new measures will not take effect until 2012. In the interim, the European Union will come up against the World Trade Organization (WTO) rules on animal welfare and animal welfare labeling for the first time.
