All chicken lovers take note

I was brought up on a small family farm. Less than

100 acres. (You probably think this message is going

somewhere else) For some strange reason I learned a

different message and not from my family. It may have

come from the time when I was four when I thought the

owls (little grey people from the sky) called me into

the woods and " told " me without words about ideas we

don't have words to express. I already decided I could

not eat " meat " . All the animals were a part of my

extended family. I loved them. They loved me (it seemed

to me...). So I grew up loving chickens as companions.

At 63, I still love animals. Thus my activism and

veganism.

I just read that chicken catchers working at the Perdue

Farms in Georgetown, Delaware and Salisbury, Maryland

are paid $1.86 per 1000 chickens they catch and kill

by hand. Each catcher kills about 50,000 chickens a

day in a 12 hour shift. They grab as many as four chickens

at a time and their hands are raw and bloody because the

chickens know this is a life and death struggle and they

fight as best as they can to stay alive.

(from THE PROGRESSIVE, October 2000, page 25.

Now I'm sure Frank Perdue won't be impressed if a few

vegans write to complain. We love chickens more than

Frank's commercials suggest that he does. We don't eat

chickens so we can't effectively create an economic

threat. But we do know people who do and we can pass

this along. I mentioned this to vegetarian folks who

occassionaly eat chicken, for example. They told me

they would spread the word and not buy from Perdue.

I'm sure this happens at every commercial chicken

operation. Soon others will realize what a terrible

thing it is to eat " meat " . But meanwhile, we need to

work with others outside our vegan circle to effect

more change. Frank Purdue, Inc. is a good target.

PS: I love people too, but not all they do...
