Guest guest
What is a Vegan? A vegan (pronounced VEE-gun) is someone who does not use animal products, animal by-products, or products tested on animals. The term vegan was coined in London in 1944 by seven vegetarians who met to form the Vegan Society, which still thrives in England. They used the first three and last two letters of the word vegetarian to form the word vegan. Why Vegan? Although there are many different reasons given for becoming vegan, there is only one that is consistent with veganism. It is concern for animals. Many people become vegetarian because they do not want to kill animals. However, in today's society, because the conditions of animals raised for food are so inhumane, many people become vegan and avoid animal products completely. This is the fundamental reason for being vegan and the only reason that seems consistant with the idea of veganism. Essential Veganism: You are not required to have animal companions or enjoy animal companions to be vegan. You must only know that animals are not here for our use and exploitation (as food, clothing, entertainment or medical or other experimentation). Finally, your lifestyle speaks your veganism more than your words. True veganism is not an occupation or a source of income. The vegan lifestyle is austere and devoid of consumerism consistant with the non-use of animal products. Vegans need not be overt activists. If you are true to the principles of veganism as stated above, your have done your work. Beyond that, everyone has their own interpretation and manifestation. Consider " essential veganism " as a benchmark. I am not vegan for reasons of health or any personal gain. Living on the fringe of social values puts one at risk. Because of the extensive use of animal products, one has to accept the risk that most care and treatment is at the expense of other species. I accept that risk. Living on this planet is a risk. Living in society is a risk. I also accept the risk of being vegan. ~ernie
