Guest guest
VERY URGENT: DEADLINE: OCTOBER 16, 2000 BY MAIL . (if you can , please send Express mail, thanks.) KILLING OF YELLOWSTONE'S BUFFALO COULD CONTINUE FOR 15 YEARS Yellowstone¹s buffalo, the last free-roaming wild buffalo herd in North America, could be slaughtered for another 15 years under a final federal management plan. Two years ago, the sad treatment of this symbol of the American West touched off the second greatest outpouring of public comment about a wildlife issue in our nation¹s history. More than 67,000 citizens urged the government to stop its slaughter, make vital winter habitat outside Yellowstone National Park available to buffalo, and treat buffalo like wildlife, not livestock. The best available science instructs us that Yellowstone buffalo have never passed the brucellosis disease to cattle. Yet more than 3,000 buffalo have been slaughtered during the past 12 years, ostensibly to protect cattle. It makes far more sense to vaccinate cattle (as Wyoming does) and to keep cattle and buffalo separated, than to slaughter buffalo, which now number only 2,800 in our first national park. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Yellowstone¹s buffalo need your help today. The public comment period on the Final Environmental Impact Statement ends October 16. Please take a few moments to let the Park Service know that YELLOWSTON'S BUFFALO MUST BE PROTECTED. Cut and paste the sample letter below and send it to: Address : Bison Management Plan EIS Team Yellowstone National Park Attn: Sarah Bransom, YCR P.O. Box 168 YNP, Wyoming 82190 U.S.A. Or write your own message. BE SURE TO INCLUDE YOUR NAME AND ADDRESS SO YOUR COMMENT WILL BE COUNTED. Your letter will make big differences ! You can get more information about the Park Service plan at http://www.nps.gov/planning ------------------- SAMPLE LETTER : Dear Park Service, I am very disappointed that the final EIS for Bison Management in Yellowstone does not protect buffalo from slaughter or treat them like wildlife. Buffalo are not livestock and Yellowstone National Park is not a ranch. Yellowstone¹s buffalo are a NATIONAL TREASURE. The federal agencies have the responsibility to protect this magnificent, last wild animal. I urge the federal agencies to make a Record of Decision which : 1) IF you do not STOP your government slaughter of the country's last, free-roaming buffalo herd, we will advise our friends, members never travel to Yellow Stone Park anymore. We will also inform our country's media about the cruelty in U.S. Yellowstone Park ! 2) Makes public lands adjacent to Yellowstone available to public wildlife; 3) Bases buffalo management decisions on science, not politics; 4) Allows buffalo to live in Yellowstone, our first national park, without being hazed, tested, invasively monitored, captured or killed. We would be very grateful to you for your kindness, compassion and help to protect the last herd of Bisons in the world .
