SUNDAY, Oct. 22 (HealthScout) -- You don't need to eat meat to make a strong

showing at a big sports meet.

Whether you're an Olympian, a professional football player, a marathon runner or

a hockey jock, eating a vegetarian diet can make you a lean, mean sports

machine, says Lisa Dorfman, author of a book called The Vegetarian Sports

Nutrition Guide.

" It's for anybody who's athletic or fitness-minded, or just wants to learn to

eat like somebody who's fitness-minded, " says Dorfman, a Miami sports

nutritionist who competes in marathons and triathlons and who coaches

Olympic-level athletes.

In her book, Dorfman gives advice on how to exercise, train and compete at your

best by eating a plant-based diet. There are suggestions on how to customize a

nutrition program to a specific sport, and how to calculate a personal dietary

plan for training and competition.

Dorfman says her book is an easy-to-follow guide for more than the

sports-minded.

" Basically if you get out of bed, you're active, " says Dorfman, who's known as

the " Running Nutritionist. "

Included in the book are training secrets and recipes from 17 top athletes,

including Olympic wrestler Chris Campbell, six-time Ironman triathlon champion

Dave Scott and professional football player Art Sill.

And there's Ruth Heidrich. After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 1982 at

47, she became a vegan and a runner. She's competed in six Ironman competitions

and has more than 600 medals and trophies from marathons and triathlons.
