Guest guest
I know this piece isn't strictly on topic, but I thought people on the list would be responsive to this issue. Keep up the good work, everyone! Endangered Species Act is Under Attack! Senator Stevens from Alaska is adding an amendment to one of Congress' budget bills that would bypass a court injunction and open critical Steller sea lion habitat up for trawl fishing. These sea lions are literally starving to death because their primary source of food, the pollock, is already overfished. Stevens' rider would only make the situation worse. In addition, it could cripple the ESA by setting a dangerous precedent. If the ESA is disregarded in this situation, how long will it be before politicians start to allow destruction of the habitats of other protected marine animals like the endangered manatee? President Clinton has said that he will oppose anti-environmental riders on appropriations bills, but as budget negotiations on Capitol Hill become more heated, it becomes more and more likely that Clinton will decide to compromise with Stevens on this issue. In fact, several newspapers have already reported that Clinton's aides are working on a deal with the Senator. You can help protect the Steller sea lion and ESA in just 2 simple steps! 1. Visit http://environet.policy.net/grassroots to write a FREE fax to President Clinton's office telling him not to make deals with Sen. Stevens on this issue. 2. Forward this message to all of your friends and family members who care about protecting the environment. On an issue like this, every voice counts!<p> Please, write your FREE fax to President Clinton TODAY! Thank you for your help.
