Poultry production under spotlight

By Roberta Rampton

Winnipeg bureau

The way Canadian poultry farmers raise their chickens and turkeys will be put

under a microscope in 2001.

The industry is set to revise its voluntary but widely followed code of

practice, a review that hasn't taken place for more than a decade.

Public opinion about how farm animals are raised has taken a significant shift

since the last review, noted Joy Ripley, president of the Canadian Federation of

Humane Societies.

" People are becoming very conscious of the way their food is raised, " said

Ripley in Calgary.

" Humane treatment of poultry is going to be front and centre in all of these

issues. "
