The move announced on Friday, which comes into effect in 2002 and includes all wild beasts, follows similar bans by countries such as Finland, Sweden and Israel. The Agri-food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) said mishaps at traveling circuses were on the rise. " In some cases, the accidents have resulted in serious injuries and death to both trainers and the public, " it said in a statement. " Reports of abuse and mistreatment of these animals by circus owners and trainers have become more regular. The prolonged periods spent by these wild animals in the cages/containers used to transport and hold them may compromise their welfare. " The AVA said it was giving the one-year notice to minimize disruption to circus schedules but was imposing stricter measures on the keeping of wild animals in the meantime.
