Hello-

while I have no idea where to find that in Canada, I'd just like to caution you

that cats cannot survive without meat. Unlike dogs, their physiology just can't

survive long as a vegetarian. Please ask your veterinarian before you take such

a step.

Canadian vegetarian cat food

Hi all;

Anyone know of any place in Canada where one can get vegetarian

cat food?

Thanks Susanne.

I think the thing cats actually need, rather than the meat

itself, is the taurine, an amino acid that meat supplies in the

quantity that cats needs, that the plant kingdom does not offer.

When taurine is supplemented, cats have thrived on vegan diets.

Some cats actually prefer it.

Here is a website with some of the basics and more resources.

http://www.montanasat.net/vegepet/index.html There really isn't

any question that it can be done. Your caution is commendable,

and I hope this reassures you.

Properly formulated vegetarian cat food is widely available in

the states, the problem I have been having is finding convenient

access. Shipping it up from the States gets so awkward.

Thanks for these sites, they are great, but none Canadian. So, I

am still looking for a place to get vegetarian cat food IN

Canada. My local pet food store doesn't want to deal with it. I

had enough trouble getting them to bring in vegetarian dog food,

they don't even want to discuss cat food.

I bought Vegecat for my cats at the Toronto Vegetarian Food Fair last year. I

tried one recipe and they didn't like it.

Cats needing meat is not entirely utter nonsense, they are carnivores afterall,

whether we like it or not. I understand the taurine issue which is why I was

okay with trying the veg food but I also don't feel bad about feeding them meat.

I currently feed them Holistic Blend http://www.holisticgold.com/en/index.html

which they love, and is made in Canada. You can even ask for a free sample

http://www.holisticgold.com/en/free_samples.html

So if you can't/don't feed your cats veg then I suggest sticking with a

" natural " pet food instead of the regular crap brands.
