Guest guest
Hello! I am a reporter for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in Atlanta, Ga. I have been given clearance to write a story for our Style section on " dressing vegan. " I am very excited about this assignment. I myself am vegetarian and avoid wearing leather garments or accessories. Too often, in my opinion, people see fur, leather, etc. as fashion, not as skin. And they certainly don't think about the sources for silk and wool!! We want to present another option to our readers: cruelty-free clothes, shoes, accessories and cosmetics. This is definitely a first for my newspaper, and my research has shown that this has barely been touched in other publications, too. BUT THIS IS NOT A POLITICAL STORY. I can not and will not take a confrontational or persuasive tone in this article. Our approach will be to briefly define veganism and present fashionable garments and accessories that are acceptable to vegans. The tone will be neutral-to-positive in all aspects. I will not respond to negative or extremist communication. This is a fantastic opportunity to educate the public. The Style section runs on Sundays in a well-read section of the paper. It's enormous exposure, and my editor is very open to my ideas. But I need your help: suggestions for specific items to mention or show; companies dedicated to cruelty-free commerce; names of famous vegans. The more specific, the better. URLs and contact information are welcome and appreciated. We are thinking of a photograph with a man and a woman dressed head-to-toe in vegan clothes and accessories. We want to demonstrate that trendy, fashionable, professional people can be vegan and still look sharp -- not only like flower children. We want to show that veganism is a perfectly responsible, respectable, and " normal " lifestyle. It's not hard to find synthetics, but I know not all synthetics are vegan. I'm also hoping to give some exposure to ethical vendors. Local companies (Georgia-based) are ideal, but another company with an e-commerce Web site would be OK. We would need to be able to borrow merchandise for a photo shoot, but everything would be returned. Also, I need suggestions for vegan cosmetics, as I would love to use cruelty-free makeup on our models. I'm thinking Kiss My Face and Body Shop... any others? Please contact me via this address; I will try to respond to all messages -- hopefully there will be lots! I see this as a great opportunity to share an important, loving and ethical message!! Please help! Sincerely, Amy Auctions - Buy the things you want at great prices. http://auctions./
Guest guest
Here's a website I have found about shoes, very comprehensive I think. http://www.vrg.org/nutshell/leather.htm#dmen There's lots of cruelty-free makeup companies. Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine offers a large list. Their website is www.pcrm.org Deborah I am very excited about this assignment. Guest guest
Unless things are different in the States, Body Shop do not claim that any of their products are vegan. They used to hold a list, but no longer. They only claim that they are not tested on animals, not that they are cruelty-free. Certainly they use milk products and bee products. I also heard a rumour at one point that they used crushed bone, though I would emphasise that this is only a rumour. Perhaps you could email them direct? Guest guest
When I have shopped there, I have noticed that SOME of their products are marked as vegan, at least in the catalogue. While not all are vegan, I think their products are vastly better than things from Proctor and Gamble for example. While they are not 100%, I still think they are worth mentioning when talking about AR conscious body care companies, IMO. Guest guest
According to PETA, Bodyshop is cruelty free. As for the ingredients, I'm not sure. Maria Auctions - Buy the things you want at great prices. http://auctions./
Guest guest
In a message dated 1/24/2001 9:54:23 AM Pacific Standard Time, bliss writes: > Regarding Vegan Style...I dress in a typical fashion victim style with my > staple of black outfits...and > > Thanks Bliss! When I first made the entire transition it was an ego thing to let go of the idea that I had to blend in and not look " cheap. " I am glad I have grown out of that. I now wear my pleather jacket with pride and occasionally I have heard the " oh, I thought it was leather, you'd never know " comment which is actually dismaying. I detest PAyless type shoes as they are ill formed and bad for peoples feet so I am pleased to be finding synthetics through companies such as Sketchers. I can't help but suspect that technology lags in finding a better alternative to leather in footwear. I am sure there must be something better than letter but again it is a status quo thing. Since I am in PR and wear business attire, staying away from wool is my biggest challenge! C
Guest guest
Hiya Regarding Vegan Style...I dress in a typical fashion victim style with my staple of black outfits...and I've found that there is always alot of clothes to choose from when you dress in plastic. There is no need to dress badly or not wash your hair like I've seen at Rallies! Denim and vintage cords and dresses are usually cotton or vegan blends ofcourse, and its pretty simple to wear faux fur coats. My shoes are " pleather " (plastic leather), and my leather shoes are gathering dust. My makeup is by MAC cosmetics- although I am not sure about all the ingredients - it is not tested on animals...fur sure! (http://www.mac.com) My hair products and bathroom stuff (shampoo etc) come from LUSH which have alot of vegan stuffstuff! At LUSH you can get all sorts of lovely vegan items. See http://www.lushcanada.com/ I don't find it hard to wear or find vegan stuff. I havent gotten rid of all my silk though- because its vintage and expensive- but I definelty won't buy it! Anyways it's embarassing but I do shop at Le ChATEAU (Canada) and they always have fake stuff! Symthetics are it baby! So there's my say... Peace, Bliss. -- Free email services provided by http://www.goodkarmacafe.com Powered by Instant Portal

When I first saw them, I thought " EW! because I assumed they would leave a film of gunk on my hair the way washing hair with soap would. The clerk assured me that the solid bar shampoos leave the hair shiny, soft and clean, so I decided to be brave and try one. I haven't looked back! The shampoo bars are also wonderfully convenient to travel with (no more leaking bottles in my suit case!)and can be used for all-over cleansing, which saves even more room in the bag! Also, their solid bubble bath is really nice. Dandy stuff! :-) Deborah

As for > the ingredients, I'm not sure. > > Maria > I suppose it depends on your definition of " cruelty-free " . A lot of people think that calf's milk (used insome BS products) is cruelty-free. Though how anyone can think of animal-derived gelatine is cruelty-free is beyond me. As one other group member opined, they look good up against the likes of Procter & Gamble, so maybe that was the criterion used by PETA. Or, as I said before, maybe things are different in different parts of the world. Cathy

I do use some of their products, but I always read the ingredients before purchasing anything....whether it is food or health and beauty products. As for milk and gelatine.....ugh! I shudder when I think of it. Guest guest
------------------- Forward this message to your milk-drinking friends: Learn about MILK from A to Z:http://www.notmilk.com/milkatoz.html PLAY 2O QUESTIONS: http://www.notmilk.com/notmilkfaq.html 1. -PANIC AT CBS Robert Cohen <i4crob Why the CBS network refused to air PETA's ad. Dear Friends, _______ Here's a question I'd like to see on " Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? " Identify the author of the following quote. (Answer at the end of this column) " We are no longer an industrialized society; we aren't even a post-industrial or technological society. We are now a corporate society, a corporate world, a corporate universe. This world is a vast cosmology of small corporations orbiting around larger corporations who, in turn, revolve around giant corporations, and this whole endless, eternal, ultimate cosmology is expressly designed for the production and consumption of useless things. " _______ PETA'S singing cow ad caused a panic at the highest level at CBS headquarters. I learned the following from a close friend who works for CBS. He shall forever remain nameless. This could be one of the hottest stories of the year, and his job would be in jeopardy if I revealed his name. CBS is now owned by VIACOM. Sumner Redstone is VIACOM's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. THE PETA SURVIVOR CONNECTION CBS generates over $10 billion in revenue per year, and their most successful show will be this year's SURVIVOR II. The first episode of SURVIVOR will air after this year's SUPER BOWL. Thirty second commercials on SURVIVOR cost advertisers nearly $500,000. That's not rat feed. This year's SURVIVOR takes place on a cattle ranch in the Australian outback. What will the SURVIVORS eat? PETA will not like this one, to be sure. A CAREFULLY GUARDED SECRET The SURVIVORS slaughter and eat a cow. I am told that the uncut scenes were gross and disgusting. The survivors eat the liver. They eat the tongue. They eat every part of the animal, including the udder. Imagine how PETA will react to this story line? VIACOM'S top executives did just that. The order to kill PETA'S ad came right from the top. VIACOM regrets the cow slaughter. It's too late now to edit the story line. Executives hope that PETA does not call for a nationwide boycott of CBS and its advertisers. Stay tuned. Here are the lyrics to PETA'S singing cow ad: I'm a steer, And they're steering you wrong . Listen now (I'm a cow!) 'Cuz I don't have long. Our sweet backsides Would like to stay together. We don't want to be your leather. Won't you show me some love? Don't you make me kid gloves Or a jacket or a shoe 'Cuz my skin ain't for you. Do I make myself clear? Keep your hands off my rear! Here's the actual ad: http://www.notmilk.com/petacows.mov Oh, yes. The quote.
