Guest guest
U.S. Newswire 17 Jan 14:05 Humane Society Of The United States Calls For Fur-Free Inauguration National Desk Contact: Howard White, 301-258-3072; hwhite Rachel Querry, 301-258-8255; rquerry both of the Humane Society Of The United States WASHINGTON, Jan. 17 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The following was released today by the Humane Society Of The United States: If history is any guide, this week's inaugural festivities will bring out crowds draped in fur coats, wraps, and other accessories. But, says The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), if everyone wearing those garments knew what goes into making their fashion statements, they would be ashamed. Or they certainly should be. To that end, HSUS is asking everyone attending the upcoming inauguration festivities to make this a fur-free inauguration. And to get that message out, The HSUS is running a series of 16 anti-fur commercials on WJLA Channel 7 during Inauguration Week; has purchased 75 DC Metrobus taillight advertisements with its " You Should be Ashamed to Wear Fur! " message; and has arranged for a king-size (57'h x 83.5 " w) diorama to greet visitors at the Continental Airline baggage claim area at Reagan Washington National Airport. In addition, HSUS staff and volunteers will pass out " I am not a coat " cards to fur-wearing spectators along the Inauguration Parade route. " With the nation's attention focused on Washington, The HSUS is exposing the brutality behind every piece of fur apparel, " says HSUS Executive Vice President Patricia Forkan. " We want to everyone to know that fur is more than just an inappropriate fashion choice " wearing fur means pain, suffering and death for more than 30 million animals annually in the United States alone. " Forkan notes that approximately 40 animals are killed for every fur coat and that each of these animals has died a violent death, including anal electrocution, gassing, neck-breaking, drowning, shooting, and clubbing. The good news is that despite the fashion industry's advertising claims that " Fur is Back, " the fur industry has been in decline since the 1980s. To help speed that decline, The Humane Society of the United States launched its " Shame of Fur " campaign in 1988. In 1999, The HSUS renewed its anti-fur message with " Fur-Free 2000, " a consumer-driven campaign designed to bring an end to the use of animal fur in the new century. As part of its Fur-Free 2000 campaign, The Humane Society of the U.S. targeted the fashion industry, working with noted designer Oleg Cassini and Monterey Fashions of New York to introduce a line of stylish faux fur fashions. This week The HSUS announced that as part of its new " Compassion in Fashion " campaign, it is teaming with hip-hop music and fashion mogul Russell Simmons, co-founder of Def Jam Records, and Cause Marketing to offer consumers a " new hip choice in fur-free furs. " The Baby Phat Fur-Free Fur Line recently debuted in New York. " Compassion in fashion is an idea whose time has come, " says Forkan. " It is no longer necessary for animals to suffer for the sake of fashion. Thanks to new technologies, consumers can wear beautiful and luxurious clothing while making a statement that animals deserve our respect. " The Humane Society of the United States, the nation's largest animal protection organization with more than seven million members, donors, and constituents, is devoted to the protection of all animals.
