Earthroots' Wolves Ontario! Project condemns Norwegian wolf kill, asks

concerned citizens to contact Norwegian Embassy

 

Norway has announced a tentative plan to shoot most of it's two dozen

wolves. Citing livestock concerns, the Norwegian government is proposing to

hire hunters to eliminate 2 of the 3 wolf packs that range between Sweden

and Norway. Three years ago, Sweden and Norway agreed to jointly manage a

wolf recovery program in their countries.

 

The elimination of the two packs will put into jeopardy the sustainability

of the wolf population in Scandinavia currently estimated to number only 80

wolves. Helicopters and snowmobiles will be used to track and kill the

wolves. Environmentalists in the area say that hiring shepherds for the

sheep or fencing in livestock could reduce livestock kills. Currently only

800 of the approximately 30,000 livestock killed are blamed on wolves.

 

" Norwegian wildlife officials are panicking and giving into irrational

fears, " said Richard Brooks, Co-Director of Earthroots. " Killing these

wolves will lead to their extermination from the Scandinavian landscape. "

 

This move is big step backwards for wolf conservation and recovery efforts

in Europe, which has recently seen wolf populations increasing from near

zero levels. Earthroots' Wolves Ontario! project is asking concerned

wildlife supporters and wolf defenders to call/email/mail in their concerns

to the Norwegian embassy and consulates.
