Canada's inspection of food under fire

Federal system `is not good enough,' Ottawa watchdog finds

Tim Harper

OTTAWA BUREAU

Denis Desautels, in his final report on government waste and

mismanagement, found the Canadian

Food Inspection Agency needs to hire as many as 500 more inspectors.

He said Canadian-produced meat that is rejected for export to the

United States can be marketed in

Canada because there are lower standards here for pathogens such as

salmonella and E. coli. Only

poultry is tested in Canada for pathogens.

Although that claim led to charges from the Canadian Health Coalition

that Ottawa is not even testing

for mad cow disease, Agriculture Minister Lyle Vanclief told the House

of Commons no meat unfit

for export is marketed here.

[...]

`The agency is not regulating for the presence of pathogens

in food,

including the mad cow infection agent (bovine spongiform

encephalopathy),'' said Mike McBane of the Canadian Health

Coalition.

``There could be mad cow out there and we're not even

looking for it

because the (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) is not

equipped to deal

with food safety.

Exerpt from http://www.upperworld.com/en/news/article.php?id=103 :

" The Coalition denounced the uncontrolled use of hormones, antibiotics,

endocrine disruptors and other agro-chemicals found in meats. European

researchers added that the presence of these substances in Canadian animal

food products poses a real potential risk of secondary effects on human

health.

The group of experts maintains that the Canadian process for detecting

contaminated meat does not allow for the detection of epidemics which can

spread throughout the population such as Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy,

more commonly know as " Mad Cow Disease " . The Canadian Minister of

Agriculture has not commented on this subject and according to the European

group, he is even suspected of concealing the matter. "
