Let's give guns to bad boys

BY MARC SKULNICK

03/01/01

In a move that seems more like a black-humour television comedy sketch

than a serious idea, the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters

(OFAH) wants to put guns in the hands of young offenders as part of a

proposed rehabilitation plan similar to one already in place in several

American states.

The American plan, which includes providing troubled youth -- even those

with criminal records -- with rifle, shotgun and handgun training as

part of their rehabilitation program, was the subject of the speech " Is

Hunting Good for Bad Kids? " which Oregon resident Randall Eaton

delivered last weekend at the OFAH's annual convention in Toronto.

Eaton's keynote address was part of a presentation entitled " Hunting as

Initiation: A Solution to Teen Violence, " which also features --

surprise -- the enthusiastic support of

rock-singer-turned-crossbow-hunting-advocate Ted Nugent. The

presentation features several initiatives involving firearms training

for youth with criminal records, according to a press release from the

International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW).
