Guest guest
Groups Sue Smithfield for Hog Pollution By Julie Vorman WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A group of environmentalists and family farmers filed three lawsuits on Wednesday accusing Smithfield Foods Inc. (SFD), the world's biggest pork producer, of contaminating North Carolina rivers and streams with vast amounts of hog manure. The legal assault on so-called " factory farms " is being spearheaded by the Water Keeper Alliance, an environmental group headed by Robert Kennedy Jr., plus the Sierra Club, the National Farmers Union, and several other grassroots farm and green groups. The coalition has hired a team of high-powered trial attorneys, including some who successfully sued the tobacco and asbestos industries. A fourth lawsuit was to be filed on Thursday in Tampa, Fla., according to Kevin Madonna, an attorney for the coalition. The three lawsuits filed on Wednesday asked federal and state court judges in North Carolina to stop Smithfield from allegedly polluting waterways, killing fish and fouling air with animal odors. continued here.... http://news.excite.com/news/r/010228/19/business-environment-hogs-dc -- Free email services provided by http://www.goodkarmacafe.com Powered by Instant Portal
