Petland is a national pet store chain with 123 stores across the US IDA is offering $500 to $2500 for any information, documents, photos or videos that prove negligence or animal abuse perpetrated by any Petland store owner. The reward offer was conceived after an incident last month at a Petland in Charleston, WV in which the owner, Mary Ellen Morton, was charged with multiple counts of alleged cruelty after she abandoned 39 starving and neglected dogs. Ms. Morton was evidently reported to authorities by one of her employees. In July 2000, IDA launched a national boycott of Petland for its reliance on puppies and kittens acquired from commercial pet producers, also known as & quot;puppy mills. & quot; Petland's corporate officials are being encouraged by IDA to instead work with local pounds and shelters to place homeless but healthy and adoptable dogs and cats who are otherwise killed for lack of homes. Petland's corporate officers have ignored IDA's concerns conveyed to them in a letter last July. These concerns expressed how the commercial pet production industry utilizes factory farming techniques that cruelly exploit breeding animals till their productive capacity is exhausted. Living conditions for these animals and their offspring is unconscionable even in those facilities that industry leaders tout as & quot;state of the art. & quot; IDA will not call off it's boycott until Petland severs ties with the commercial pet production industry responsible for the proliferation of & quot;puppy mills. & quot; & quot;We are determined to stem the tide of suffering and misery that Petland perpetuates, & quot; said Marshall Smith, IDA's director of investigations. & quot; The incident last month at the Petland in Charleston, WV was not an isolated incident. This past December authorities gave the storeowner a warning after it was learned that the animals had been neglected over the holidays. The apparent neglect was dismissed by Petland as a scheduling glitch, but the subsequent abandonment of 39 starving and neglected animals by this same owner shows that this is really part of a much larger, underlying problem. & quot; To qualify for IDA's reward offer, Petland employees must furnish a copy of the complaint submitted to enforcement authorities that subsequently results in a verifiable arrest./
