Guest guest
I just went through the vegan values page.. hmm.. sounds almost exactly like a pro-life values/propaganda page. So it got me thinking, and I've heard this from vegans before, does being a vegan mean you have to be pro-life? Or is only animal life important. Don't get me wrong, I am pro-choice and a vegan, but my point is, so matter what we do, we can't get rid of hipocrisy. we are all hypocrites, whether we like it or not. so, in an attempt to challenge my own pessimistic conclusion about humanity, in the end of this discussion, if it is concluded that to be a vegan you must be pro-life, then i hereby renounce my status of vegan that i've held since birth. hope to hear from all of you (and please excuse the bitter tone-- i just woke up :-P) -Belle _______________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Guest guest
Wow, what a great point. I never even thought of that but I feel that the following excerpt from the page, " As Vegans, we strive to be thoughtful, aware and concerned about the impact of our choices, our actions and our decisions. " is supportive of being pro-choice. It coincides with the philosphy of decreasing the amount of suffering to all species, all animals, including humans. I don't believe that any woman *wants* to have an abortion and if all measures are taken to prevent such an outcome, then she has certainly been thoughtful, aware and concerned about the impact of her decision(s). I look forward to seeing active discussion on this one. Guest guest
Sigh........OK, time to open myself up for the usual hostility. First, the issue of abortion is NOT 'off-topic'. It is entirely germaine to the ethics which are fundamental to the vegan/animal rights movement. Second, abortion is NOT 'the removal of cells'. How convenient to view it that way. How utterly dishonest. Abortion is the killing of a living being- just like slaughtering an animal for food is the killing of a living being. No more, no less. And until the animal rights movement, as a whole, faces this glaring hypocrisy, WE WILL NEVER SUCCEED. In order to survive, a philosophy must be consistent. If it is not consistent, it is not genuine, and it will fail- as it should. By the way, I was a vehement, take-it-to-the -streets pro-choice activist for many years; though I always had a gnawing sense deep inside that abortion really was murder. I am just so staunchly feminist, and libertarian, that I avoided the soul-searching which I knew on an inner level would reveal the difficult truth. I also was involved in two abortions, which I tried to tell myself at the time were justified. Finally, I got tired of running. It's time to be honest, with ourselves, each other, and the Universe- or God, as I recognize the source of all love. Do I support the rest of the agenda shared by many pro-lifers? Hell no. But truth is truth, no matter who happens to support or oppose it. Truth remains the same. If we 'sugarcoat' murder with ludicrous phrases like, 'reproductive freedom', we are just that: ludicrous. And, we are murderers. Sorry, folks, you can like it or not- you can like me, or not- but abortion is the murder of a helpless life, and if we support that- nay, if we even refuse to stand firmly AGAINST that, we are not ethical, or compassionate, at all. We are betrayers of the sacred cause to which we claim to belong. Peace and Blessings, Love and Light, Robyn Unicorn Thunderchild.
