Guest guest
Hi Bliss and everyone; Here comes the " party pooper " ! (groan!) :-) I'm a big fan of the work of Dr. John McDougall www.drmcdougall.com and his low-fat plant food recommendations. I have followed them for 15 years, and so has my husband.... ! :-) I have asked Dr. McDougall about these news articles that appear at times about " good " fats. What he has always said is " People like to hear good news about their bad habits. " Here is an URL for one of his web articles about how little fat is really necessary for optimal health. http://www.drmcdougall.com/efa.htm. He mentions the Mediterranean diet that is high in monounsaturated fats from olive oil. Clearly, subjects did do better on it than on diets high in saturated fats from animal products, but the bottom line seems to be that low-fat plant foods diet produces the best health results in humans. Personally, I prefer to avoid talking about fats as " good " or " bad " because all natural fats are necessary for human health, even cholesterol. The TRICK is in how much, and from what source. The fact is, we need cholesterol but only such a little bit. Our livers make all (and more than) we need, it's best to avoid taking it in the diet. Taking cholesterol in the diet often results in excess, leading to heart disease, etc... probably we all know that. OK... I make one exception about labelling fats " bad " , and that is " transfats " , the hydrogenated fats made by bubbling hydrogen through vegetable oil. Apparently, we don't need that, not at any level. Apparently, it is worse for us than eating saturated and cholesterol. But it is a human, not Nature-made problem. I'd agree on that one being a " bad " fat. Sadly, it is a common ingredient in many vegetarian-friendly packaged foods... I understand it is best to avoid that, 100%. And I guess the tropical fats, coconut and palm, are sort of in a grey-area, not " bad " really, but because they are highly saturated, they tend to encourage our livers to make more cholesterol than we need. So, if we talk just in terms of Nature-made fats that we do need to take in our diet, the poly and mono-unsaturated fats, it seems that we only need so little of them, we get plenty just by eating a varied diet of low-fat plant foods. The whole problem seems to be that we humans tend to have a " fat tooth " . Sure, we usually hear about the " sweet tooth " , but my understanding is that the " fat tooth " is even more of a scourge to human health. Anyway, again my apologies if I am pooping the party... I personally LOVE avocado, peanut butter, pecans, olives etc., so I'd be happy if I thought restraint about them wasn't necessary. However, I felt that I really had to say something here, as I think I'd feel like I wasn't doing my part if I were to let this go by without saying something. Wishing you all health, happiness and prosperity... Deborah Pageau B.Sc. Guest guest
I think fat is very healthy. If not for physical health, then for emotional health. Fat makes me REALLY happy (tee hee), together with big loads of sugar... ;-) _______________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
