Thanks for opening this email. * QUOTE OF THE WEEK * Lucretius * " What is food to one man is bitter poison to others. " From his six-book poem on Nature written in 50 B.C.E. entitled " On the Nature of Things. " * ACTION OF THE WEEK * Featured on the eActivist.org Homepage * Tell the FDA Not to Approve the Current Application by A/F Protein, Inc. to sell Genetically Engineered Salmon. http://www.eActivist.org A/F Protein, based in Massachusetts, has applied to the FDA for approval to commercialize a species of GE salmon and sell it worldwide to the aquaculture industry. Currently, there are no specific regulations governing the release of GE fish into the wild. Farm-raised fish regularly escape from aquaculture facilities. In February 2001, it was announced that 100,000 farm-bred fish escaped from a farm in Maine. Researchers at Purdue University in Indiana estimate that 60 fertile genetically engineered fish introduced into a natural population of 60,000 could decimate the stock in a span of 40 fish generations. Furthermore, there have been no published studies conducted that examine the human health risks of eating engineered fish. People whose lives and livelihoods may be affected have no say in the approval decision as it is being handled by the Center for Veterinary Medicine at the FDA. An action created by Greenpeace International. * WEB SITE OF THE WEEK * Organic Consumers Association * The Organic Consumers Association (OCA) promotes food safety, organic farming and sustainable agricultural practices in the U.S. and internationally.
