Dear Minister Hill:

 

I am sure you remember the recent public outcry resulting from

the deaths of thousands of baby elephant seals on Macquarie

Island, hot-iron branded in the name of scientific research.

I would like to applaud your swift action in ensuring that these

disgusting practices were immediately halted. However, recent

evidence has surfaced, claiming that other research practices

are still being conducted on the Macquarie Island seals.

 

Reports indicate that Macquarie seals are being forced to

endure extremely horrid treatment at the hands of our fellow

humans. These practices include brutally hitting mother seals

with sticks while researchers extract tissue samples from baby

seals; daily human interference of the seals for months at a time;

and very rough and invasive handling of the wild seals, often by

untrained volunteers. There exists strong evidence that the last

seven years of invasive research committed against these animals

has made the seals so fearful of humans that many of them have

moved to sites that are not only unsuitable for their well-being,

but that put their lives in sheer danger.

 

I am contacting you today in order to demand that Dr. Tony Press,

the head of the Australian Antarctic Division, be immediately terminated

from his position on the grounds of animal welfare negligence. I also

respectfully request that you ensure that the Antarctic Division's

Animal Ethics Committee is reformed, preferably via the assistance of

animal welfare groups, and that the committee be subject to regular

independent audits. The negligence and sheer lack of concern

demonstrated by the current Antarctic Division is completely

unacceptable. Something must be done, Minister Hill. I am counting on

you to ensure that justice is served and no more seals abused.
