This is what I wrote:

 

Dear Editor:

 

While I think that what Florida radio DJ Bubba the Love Sponge

did to the wild boar is horrible and disturbing, I see it as

essentially the same thing as what the meat industry does to

thousands of animals every day. As you may know, tormenting,

castrating, slitting throats (while the animal is conscious),

letting them bleed to death is standard practice to put meat on

America's (and the world's) tables.

 

There are only two differences I see between the DJ's actions and

the meat industry's:

 

 

1. The DJ did it for profit in the entertainment business.

 

2. The meat industry does it for profit in the " food " business.

 

It seems to me that what has upset so many people in Tampa (many

of whom must be meat eaters) is not the fine legal distinction of

#1, but #2, but rather the fact that the DJ did publicly what so

many people are content with as long as it is kept out of view.

 

As a vegetarian, I certainly agree with their outrage. At the

same time, when a meat-eater objects, I wonder: Why do you think

what the DJ did was wrong? Do you think it was just in " bad

taste " ? Or was it unethical? Should it be illegal? Why? What

distinction do you see between what the DJ did and what the meat

industry does? Is it only the public nature of it that makes it

wrong?

 

I think it will be interesting to see what the DJ's defense will

be. Perhaps his attorney will bring in all kinds of data from

vegan/AR

literature to show that his client's behavior was no different

from what was done to produce the jury's lunch.

 

Personally, I hope the DJ is held accountable for his behaviour,

and at the same time, I hope it is clear that what the DJ did is

done behind closed door by many others on a daily basis.
