Guest guest
I was asked to forward this for a person who is looking for alternatives to donkey basketball. Can anybody help? Campaign Against Donkey Basketball Many schools put on donkey basketball games each year as fund raisers. The problems with this sport are many, not the least of which is the fact that the donkeys are not allowed to eat or drink for 36 to 48 hours before the game to prevent them from messing on the gym floor. After their forced to go without food and water for as long as two days, they get the honor of carrying the school staff around on their backs on a slick gym floor for the game. Since they have been without food and water and are forced into an unnatural environment, the donkeys get a little frisky and disoriented, much to the amusement of the crowd. I am concerned that the treatment of the donkeys is inhumane, that they are forced into unnatural circumstances, that they are forced to carry people on their backs, that many are injured on the floor, and most of all, it is another indication to the students (youth) that we do not have to show respect for animals. At a time when there is more and more violence taking place in our schools, the schools should be making every effort to teach respect for ALL life and that each and every one of us needs to respect the rights and diginity of all other living creatures, NOT that it is OK to use donkeys (or any other living creature) for brief interludes of entertainment to raise a few bucks for the school. My approach is to provide schools with as many animal supportive fund raising alternatives as I can (with your help) to persuade them that it is time to use their influence on the students and the community to promote animal dignity and respect. I had success eliminating the game with one school this year at the suggestion of a friend who knows of my many campaigns. Unfortunately the school is not eliminating the donkey basketball for the right reasons. I did not have a list of alternatives to present to them and time was short, so I used a more direct approach. I hate to use that tactic because it doesn't accomplish my goal, getting people to acknowledge the need to treat all animals with respect and recognize the fact that we are here as their guardians and caretakers, not to use them for our own amusement and certainly not as our food. If you would be so kind as to send your recommendations for ANIMAL SUPPORTIVE fund raisers to me, I will be most appreciative. I will also share with you the list I prepare for the schools. I have contacted PETA, HSUS and all other major organizations I can think of, but I am looking to individuals to come up with new and creative ideas for fund raisers that concentrate on treating all animals humanely.
