If you are an Oregon resident please contact your state senator in support of this legislation. HSUS APPLAUDS OREGON HOUSE FOR PASSING LEGISLATION TO BAN POSSESSION AND SALE OF BIRDS FOR COCKFIGHTING SALEM (May 3, 2001) - Today, the Oregon House of Representatives passed HB 2930, a bill to ban the breeding, training, possession, and sale of birds for fighting purposes. The House approved the legislation, authored by Representatives Mark Hass (D-8) and Jeff Kropf (R-37), by a vote of 48 & #8211; 12. " Cockfighting is a gruesome and barbaric activity, " states Kelly Peterson, Oregon program coordinator for The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). " The HSUS is enormously grateful to the House for passing this legislation to strengthen our state's anti-cockfighting law. We hope that the Senate follows suit and moves this humane-minded legislation on to the Governor for his signature. " Oregon banned cockfighting in 1970, but it has been legal to raise, train, possess, and sell the birds for fighting purposes. HB 2930 seeks to close the animal-fighting loophole in Oregon law. In addition to The HSUS, the Oregon State Police, Oregon Sheriffs' Association, Association Chiefs of Police, and local law enforcement agencies throughout the state endorsed HB 2930. " HB 2930 closes a gaping hole in Oregon's anti-cockfighting law. Cockfighters are using the loophole as a smokescreen to conceal their illegal animal fighting activities in state, " says Wayne Pacelle, a senior vice president of The Humane Society of the United States. " Cockfighters pump birds full of stimulants, affix razor-sharp knives to their legs, and place them in a pit to fight to the death for amusement or illegal wagering. " The HSUS also singled out House Judiciary Committee Chairman Max Williams (R-9) for his leadership in passing and pushing this legislation. " We are grateful for the leadership of Chairman Williams and Representatives Haas and Kropf for advancing this important legislation. " " We are hopeful that Senate President Gene Derfler (R-16) will assign this legislation to the Senate Judiciary Committee and allow the full Senate to vote on it soon, " states Peterson. The Congress is also considering legislation, S. 345 and H.R. 1155, to bar any interstate shipment of animals for fighting purposes. Senators Gordon Smith and Ron Wyden and Representatives Earl Blumenauer (D-3), Peter DeFazio (D-4), Darlene Hooley (D-5), and David Wu (D-1) are cosponsors of the federal legislation. -30- Post message: BanFur Subscribe: BanFur- Un: BanFur- List owner: BanFur-owner Shortcut URL to this page: /community/BanFur Auctions - buy the things you want at great prices http://auctions./
