What's In the Meat?

For the second time in three months, American consumers have heard about a

huge recall of potentially tainted meat. It's enough to ruin the heartiest

appetite, and make one question the claim that the United States has the

safest food supply in the world.

 

In late July, ConAgra pulled some 19 million pounds of ground beef off the

market because it was linked to an outbreak of E. coli poisonings. Last

Sunday, a unit of Pilgrim's Pride Corp. recalled 27.4 million pounds of

poultry products -- a new record for meat recalls -- due to positive tests

for the potentially deadly listeria bacteria.
