Guest guest
Dear friends and fellow social justice workers: As some of you may know, Alex White and Mandy Van Deven have been working for the past six months on creating a magazine that will be a forum for critical thought, coalition building, art, communication, and activism (see mission statement below). We have successfully completed the first issue including articles such as: * A Conversation with Elaine Brown, the only woman leader of the Black Panther Party, and Constance Curry, Freedom Summer and Civil Rights organizer * Mr Lif talks about the politics of Hip-Hop * Interview with Sleater Kinney * A Feminist Analysis of the U.S. response to 9-11 by Zillah Eisenstein * Shebang!, an all-girl break dancing crew, tell us how it feels to be b-girl pioneers The only thing that is lacking now are the funds to get the magazine printed, which is a critical need in order to be able to put the magazine into the hands of the public. We are writing to ask for your help because we cannot do this without your support. In order for activists to be successful, it is imperative to be supportive of each other. We are asking you to make a contribution to a project that has at its core the intention of bringing together communities that have thus far been divided. Every dollar counts and puts Altar Magazine one step closer to being in your hands. We accept contributions in any denomination, no matter how big or small (see below for options). You may be wondering what you get out of donating, besides our love and respect. Anyone who donates will be thanked in Altar Magazine whether you give $1 or $1000. If you donate $5 or more you will receive the first issue of Altar Magazine free! If you donate $20 or more, we will send you an Altar Magazine t-shirt. If you donate $100 or more, we will print a 1/4 page advertisement for the non- profit/activist organization of your choice. Our printing deadline is January 15, 2003, therefore, we need to receive all donations by that date. We understand that not everyone will be able to donate. To those who cannot, we ask that you forward this letter to people who you believe do have that ability. We thank you in advance for your kindness. In solidarity, Alex White and Mandy Van Deven Co-Editors/Publishers Altar Magazine PO Box 5952 Atlanta, GA 31107-0952 www.altarmagazine.com info Mission Statement Altar Magazine believes that problems are not monolithic, and neither are solutions. It is imperative to have socially progressive women and men fighting on all fronts of the movement whether that is anti- racist work, feminism, anti-heterosexism, economic justice or any other political action. Altar Magazine exists within a community that is fragmented, but not broken. It exists in a time when coalition is crucial and must be implemented. We believe that the personal is political; therefore, all forms of creativity are inherently political. We want to create a space where critical thought and understanding happen simultaneously. This is important because before we can create social change we must be able to re-imagine communities that foster difference. We must be able to take ownership of that which we do not claim in order to effectively critique this oppressive system that we know and perpetuate. Social change is not momentous. It is a process. Our hope is that each individual recognizes his or her place within this system of change.
