We request each of you to read this e-mail and

contact the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests

regarding the treatment meted to one of their wards.

Rani, a rescued circus elephant, was brought

from Mumbai to Bandipur national park eight months

ago. Despite the Forest department’s efforts, her

health has been deteriorating. She has been attacked

by a tusker at the elephant camp, leaving her

terrified when confronted by other tuskers and is also

not partial to the staple diet of ragi or grass

provided by the Dept. SHE HAS MULTIPLE FEET INJURIES

(Photos attached) and her stint at the circus has

resulted in malformed legs.

Keeping this in mind, it is difficult to understand

the Forest dept.’s decision TO WALK Rani for 60 odd

kilometers on Saturday (15-02-03), despite her feet

injuries, to another location within the national

park. It is well known to all but the extremely

ignorant that PAIN is a feeling spread across mammals.

Even a small cut on our hands / feet makes us think

twice before using them. Think of an animal that

weighs tons and has to support itself on cracked feet

with overgrown nails! Think of making it walk for 50

odd km. on such feet! Think of its human handlers

being unable to understand the language of pain that

it is trying to express!

Please write or call the PCCF’s office requesting

them:

1. to provide competent veterinary care for

Rani’s various ailments

2. to provide fodder that she is accustomed to

3. to ensure that she is not again attacked by

other elephants

4. to ensure that people in nearby villages do not

harm her.

The PCCF’s address:
