Tusker runs berserk, captured

A tusker of Shirur Math which went berserk here since

Thursday evening following alleged ill-treatment by

the mahout was captured today after it was

tranquilised by a team of experts from Shimoga.

 

Paryaya Palimaru Math spokesman said that the first

tranquiliser administered in the morning did not have

any effect and the tusker, Lakshmeesha, went roaming

around the temple town.

 

Following the administration of the second

tranquiliser in the afternoon, the elephant went to

sleep after almost 20 hours of restlessness. The

tusker, enraged by the mahout’s beating, went berserk

damaging several shops and atleast six vehicles parked

on the road. The elephant which was brought to the

Rathabeedhi road without restraints damaged a bike

that was parked in front of the Krishnapur Math, eye

witnesses said.

 

Later, the elephant damaged cars parked on the

Kanakadasa street and near the Rajangana.

 

Prohibitory orders under section 144 CrPC was clamped

to prevent people going near the tusker.

 

Local legislator U R Sabhapathy, who was overseeing

the capture operation, had a narrow escape, when the

tusker started chasing him.

 

Almost all shops remained closed today and the streets

were deserted fearing an attack by the tusker.

 

The chained elephant was brought back to the temple in

the evening after it regained consciousness.
