Guest guest
OK. I have to vent. I was reading the paper this morning and saw an ad that disturbed me greatly. This ad was for chicken and the " spokesperson " was a chicken, holding a platter of its slaughtered kin above its head. Over the other wing, the chicken had a towel, like a waiter. The chicken looked so happy to be offering its own kind for human consumption. There are similar ads all around: the Starkist tuna encouraging humans to eat its fellows; Who can forget the ads for a chicken restaurant that has a cow saying something to the effect of " Give cows a break, eat chicken " ? Let's not even discuss the larger-than-life pigs and cows outside steak and ribs restaurants. It angers and disgusts me to no end. Why would any creature be " happy " to encourage the consumption of its own kind? Wouldn't this be tantamount to a smiling human holding a plate of people steaks and saying " Eat up! " ? Does this seem totally repugnant to anyone else? Doug
Guest guest
It certainly does Doug. Presumably carnivores find it amusing! Jo > people steaks and saying " Eat up! " ? Guest guest
You're absolutely right Doug. It really galls me sometimes to see the kind of advertisements on tv that are repeatedly shown. Of course the reason the companies get away with it, sadly, is because most never care to dissect what they're hearing or watching. Have you ever tried to break something down for someone, like and idea or try to tell them what something is really showing, and they just look at you funny? It's kind of off the topic, but does anyone remember when they still ate meat and the occasional conversation would come up about where the food came from, and no one would want to know, or they would shut their ears? I remember that, and that was when I was about 16 or so. I just kind of think, how are people still shutting this stuff out when they are 40 or 50? (I hope this doesn't offend anyone, the age could be any number.) The point really is that people should be able to readily recognize that something isn't right if they must try so hard to ignore it. *** Alright, sorry guys, just had to vent. Thanks a bunch. Guest guest
A few blocks from my office in Wheaton, Maryland, is a place called The Chicken Place. The sign features a giant cartoon chicken in what looks like Mexican gear. Charlie the Tuna is the most masochist example of cannabalistic ads; the guy is apparently desperate to be food. What kind of screwed-up thinking is THAT?! I mean, the chik-Fil-A cows saying " Eat Mor Chikin " (if they can write, you think they'd be able to spell) are interested in self-preservation, fine. But for cows to encourage beef consumption or pigs to encourage pork consumption is just insane. Guest guest
I haven't seen any of these ads, but I can understand where you're coming from. What bothers me too are billboards or ads with big meaty burgers or sub sandwiches with captions that read, "We're not for vegetarians." Guest guest
A devious side of me would like to try to promote the eating of humans just for the reaction. I would be either arrested or sectioned. I would certainly be deemed evil. If you are prepared to eat one animal, surely you should be prepared to eat all animals (?) & humans are after all animals. Guest guest
Hi Doug > Wouldn't this be tantamount to a smiling human holding a plate of > people steaks and saying " Eat up! " ? Does this seem totally repugnant > to anyone else? I agree completely. The one that really annoys me at the moment is one for some butter or milk product which ends with the line " so good, the cows want it back " . Well, why wouldn't they - I mean, their babies were only slaughtered to provide it! BB Peter --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). I always find it surprising when people comment on how disgusting it was for Nazi Germany to make soap from dead humans - I mean, I think it's disgusting, but then I don't wash my hands with soap made from dead animals anyway!
