Dear Mr. Calabro & Ms. Panzarella:

 

Please accept this letter as a petition requesting that you implement a

permanent policy against hosting circuses using live animals.

 

I am deeply concerned by the decision of Freehold Raceway Mall to host a

circus with performing wild animals. The elephants, big cats, bears,

primates, and other wild animals who are used in a circus endure inhumane

and abusive training and living conditions. When not performing, they spend

the great majority of their time in extremely close confinement and have

little legal protection at state or federal levels. The use of performing

wild animals not only creates a dangerous atmosphere, but also desensitizes

individuals, especially our impressionable children, to animal suffering.

 

In addition, performing wild animals pose a real threat to public safety,

precisely because they are wild and therefore unpredictable. No amount of

training or affection can eliminate this danger. Jack Hanna, world-famous

zoologist, is quoted as saying, " The first thing I tell people is a wild

animal is like a loaded gun. It can go off at any time. This is the kind of

I hope you will reconsider your promotion of this outdated type of

" entertainment. " There are many wonderful animal-free circuses you could

choose to promote instead. Please, for the sake of the animals and public

safety, implement a formal policy against the use of circuses that use

animals.
