RE: Wearing Fur is Cruel, not Glamorous – Please Break the Cycle of

Exploitation

 

Dear Ms. Berry;

 

Once it was thought that African Americans and women didn't have

souls, intelligence or longing for their family and social

structures – now we know that was a cruel lie. It wasn't so long ago

that minorities were hunted for " sport " and strung up by noose until

they died. I ask you to break the cycle of exploitation and cruelty

that is set in motion when people of a dominant class use less

protected beings as commodities for slave labor or, desiring their

skin and fur, kill and dismember their bodies to create grotesque and

unnatural pieces of clothing. Please don't use another being in this

way: please don't wear fur or fur trim.

 

Many fur-bearing animals are always trapped in the wild. Fur

trappers use steel-jawed traps that crush the animals' paws, legs,

spine, or torsos. Animals will chew off a paw or a leg to free

themselves and then wander off to bleed to death or die of

infection. Often fatally wounded mothers are found returning to

their young, dying as they try to suckle them.

 

Other animals spend their entire lives confined to tiny, filthy

cages, constantly pacing back and forth from stress and boredom.

They suffer from festering, open wounds and disease and do not

receive veterinary care as it is not " cost effective. " Killing these

animals has to be done cheaply as well. Gassing with carbon

monoxide, injecting pesticide into the heart, clubbing, drowning --

are all cheap and unreliable. Many animals are merely paralyzed and

experience all the pain and horror of being skinned alive.

 

A preferred method is anal electrocution: it's cheap and tidy. A

metal noose is strapped around the terrified animal's neck and she's

yanked from her cage. An electric prod is shoved into the animal's

rectum or vagina and a metal conductor is shoved down his throat.

Electricity surges through the animal's body causing him to convulse

for several minutes while he experiences a massive heart attack and

slowly cooks from the inside: Just before death, the animal will emit

a crackling sound and her teeth will break and fall out. The force of

the shock will cause the anal probe to fall out.

 

This is the kind of torture and slaughter that you encourage among

your fans and peers by using your position as a role model to wear

fur. There are plenty of cruelty-free fakes out there if you must

wear fur-like garmets. Please don't turn a blind eye to the slavery

and oppression of other living, emotional beings. They may not have

a " human " face, but they are intelligent beings with complex social

and emotional needs, and a psychology of their own. Again, please

don't use another being in this way: please don't wear fur or fur

trim.
