Oppose plan to expand hunting in Maryland

 

The Honorable Robert Ehrlich, Jr.:

 

Please accept this letter as a petition opposing any measures to expand

hunting in Maryland, especially of mute swans and of black bears.

 

I understand that you signed into law a measure reversing the 280-year ban

on hunting on Sundays, despite receiving thousands of phone calls from

humane advocates, equestrians, bird watchers, and others opposed to having

hunting seven days a week in the state. That same week, you authorized a

plan set forth by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources to hire

sharpshooter to kill thousands of wild mute swans, who are being unfairly

labeled as scapegoats for the deterioration of the Chesapeake Bay habitat.

These actions, along with your vocal support of a black bear hunting season

in Maryland, are hurting your state's reputation as a peaceful place to

enjoy the outdoors. Please reconsider your position and protect Maryland's

wildlife.
