Help Ensure that Animal Abusers Are Tracked by FBI

Urging the FBI to Track Animal Cruelty Offenses

Minor Changes with Major Impacts!

The Issue:

 

Animal cruelty is now a felony in 41 states plus the District of

Columbia, and is regarded by the Federal Bureau of Investigation

(FBI) as an indicator of other types of violent crime. Yet currently

the FBI considers animal cruelty under its " Miscellaneous " category

and consequently crucial details about animal abuse crimes and

offenders are not available. This lack of information hinders

efforts to prevent animal abuse and to aid offenders.

 

The Doris Day Animal League is now working to have the FBI

assign " animal cruelty " its own classification in the Uniform Crime

Reporting Program by simply adding one new line to its check list.

The Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program is a nationwide program of

the FBI that collects and publishes crime statistics from state and

local law enforcement agencies representing 94 percent of the total

U.S. population. Valuable information is gathered about the kinds of

crimes committed and the people who commit them.

 

The Solution:

 

We are thankful that Representative Frank Wolf from Virginia's 10th

District has expressed an interest in our proposal. As chairman of

the subcommittee with jurisdiction over the FBI's budget, he could

convince the FBI to make this change in its UCR Program, a change

that would be so minor and inexpensive to implement but so

significant in its impact.

 

What You Can Do:

 

If you live in the D.C. area, or anyplace else, please contact Rep.

Wolf today, thank him for his ongoing support for animal welfare, and

ask him to support this effort. Be sure to mention that:

 

1) This simple change would be easy and inexpensive for the FBI to

implement.

2) Animal cruelty is strongly linked to other forms of serious crime,

including domestic violence and child abuse

3) The information generated by the UCR Program would greatly benefit

research and prevention and intervention efforts.

4) If you are from Virginia, mention you are a constituent and thank

him for his ongoing support for animal welfare.
